Susan Jane Sommerville McCallister (Sue), age 71 of Waldo, FL, was called home
Wednesday, November 15, 2017, at North Florida Regional Medical Center with her
loving husband and children by her side. Susan was born June 25, 1946 in Danville,
Illinois to Emerson Robert and Lydia Frances Potter Sommerville. She graduated
from North Miami Junior Senior High School in 1964. Upon graduating high school,
she attended Miami Dade College, and continued her education after starting a family.
As a single mother of four, Susan met Billy Herman McCallister Sr., the love of her
life, and they married December 22, 1982. With the exchanging of vows, the
Saunders-McCallister family was forged as one.
With the support of her husband, Susan was able to pursue her dreams of entering the
medical field. She attended Santa Fe College’s Nursing School, where she was part of
the 12th graduating class in 1984. Susan’s dedication to nursing and her patients has
been recognized by the many institutions she has worked for in Florida and South
Carolina, her peers, and the families whose lives she touched during her thirty-three
year long career. Her passion was critical care, and she continued taking classes, never
abandoning her pursuit of higher knowledge. Having spent the last several years
employed at UF Health, she prided herself of helping the next generation of nurses
perfect their craft.
Susan had an extraordinary amount of energy, and an infinite amount of love for her
family and her job. She loved to travel, and shared her worldview with her children,
teaching them that we are small in life, and that there is so much beyond what we can
see. Her favorite retreat was to her cabin in West Virginia, where she loved to visit
the pool and read. Susan was a woman of faith, and she lived by the golden rule, “Treat
others the way that you would want to be treated.” She was an avid softball player,
swimmer, hunter, and lover of nature. Any day spent with her husband, children, or
grandchildren was a day to remember.
Susan was preceded in death by her father and mother, and she lived knowing that she
would one day be reunited with her son, Marine Corps, Lance Corporal Kenneth
“Beau” W. Saunders (wife Christina Soto).
Susan is survived by her husband, Billy Herman McCallister Sr.; her children: Sean
Patrick Saunders, twins Keith Emerson Saunders (wife Dianna) and Kelly Michael
Saunders (wife Betty-Jo), Virginia Gale Lewis (husband Bryan), Billy Herman
McCallister Jr., Angela McCallister Stallings (husband Marty), and Kenneth Bradley
McCallister; her grandchildren: Taylor Jane Saunders, Alex Marie Saunders, Austin
Kyle Saunders, Brittany Nicole Mosher (husband Logan), Kristin Renee Lewis, Anna
Belle Lewis, Anita Lyn Quarles, Hailey Gail McCallister, Cora Belle McCallister, Jase
Huntley McCallister, Caleb Martin Stallings, Makayla Lucille Stallings; and her one
great-granddaughter, Kinsley Marie Mosher. Arrangements are under the care of Crevasse's Simple Cremation.

So sorry for the loss of such a beautiful lady. May God give you comfort and strength.
Although you will be missed by many Sue, we know you are now resting in peace and in Gods grace. May serenity come to your family through remembrance of the many cherished memories of times shared together during your life, your love and your unselfish compassion towards others whom you’ve touched.
My thoughts, love and prayers are with you all! I love you all!
Love you, Miss Sue. I cherish the times we were able to spend together as a family, and I will miss you greatly. Love to all the family.
To the family of Sue I know what it is like to lose a loved one whom we care so much about. I have went thru this twice now just recently losing my mom. I rest in knowing she is with her Heavenly Father walking the streets of Gold. I will cherish every memory that she and I shared sitting by the pool at the camp she dearly loved. My prayer is hoping the Lord gives you peace and comfort. Patty and Jimmy Hamilton
So many treasured memories with this special lady. She truly loved her family and as long as I’ve known her has always been a caregiver. Her love for life showed in her big warm smile. Love and prayers to you all. God Bless.
My love and prayers for Billy and family. She was a special lady. When Bill was in the hospital years ago she would check on him even when she worked a different floor. We remembered her taking him from ICU to his room and she wasn’t even working that day. She was an angel for us at Alachua General! So many memories from days in the woods and cookouts from days gone by! Love y’all so much! Sue is loving on Beau, her Mama and Daddy and l know she’ll save a hug for my Bill too. God Bless! ❤️
