Dan Ryan Hixenbaugh
Born in Omaha, Nebraska, graduated from Ohio State University where he was a member of Delta Upsilon Fraternity and president Pi Sigma Alpha ( Political Science Honorary fraternity).
He served 3-1/2 years during World War II on the USS Lamson, a destroyer in the South Pacific. On December 7, 1944, the Lamson was attacked by a kamikaze, crashing into the ship's superstructure. Dan led a rescue team to put out the fires onboard, salvaged the crippled ship to limp back to Seattle for repairs and was awarded the Bronze Star with Combat V.
He retired as Vice President-Advertising and Public Relations of 84 Lumber Company after 20 years of expansion from 17 stores to 400 nationwide. Dan was responsible for creating grand opening events as legendary as Paul Bunyan himself to create buzz in the local community about the new store opening, using unconventional acts such as Victor the Wrasslin' Bear, Dixie Blandy the flagpole sitter and the famous Flying Wallenda's highwire act.
Long time member of the Ponte Vedra Club and president of their Mens Golf Association. Dan felt there was no place more beautiful than a golf
course in the morning, especially his beloved Ponte Vedra Inn and Club golf course and enjoyed his weekly golf foursomes.
Dan served as Past President and National Director of the U.S. Navy League, an organization dedicated to educating citizens of the importance of a strong Navy and supporting the men and women who serve.
He also enjoyed his time as past chairman of the Churchmen and President of the Residents Council of The Carriage Club.
Dan is survived by two daughters, Devon Sloan and Diane Loving in Tucson and two sons, Ryan in Seattle and Christopher in Jacksonville as well as four very special and talented grandsons.
His wife of 55 years, Patience Loving Hixenbaugh preceded him in death in 2001 along with his brother, Walter Hixenbaugh in 2009.
