George Alex Gerencser

Our hearts are broken at the loss of George at too early an age. We first met George and Alison in the fall of 1976 when we moved to Gainesville for two years of postdoctoral study in the Department of Physiology. George was the first person present after the birth of our first son, John. When the nurses told him that only the husband was allowed in, George told them, "I’m not the husband, but I am the father!" He was a very humorous man. He repeatedly called us using hilarious accents and pretending to be various unique characters. But, far beyond his humor, George was a kind and loving person. He and Alison looked over our first-born son, John, some 18 years later when he attended the University of Florida. George was forever more interested in helping the disadvantaged in very personal ways. George was also a very athletic person, a great basketball player and tennis player. He was simply full of life right up until illness jumped up and grabbed him over the past months. May light eternal shine upon him and may time heal the wound of his loss with his family and friends. We mourn the loss of our great friend.
