William Thomas Mason, Jr. was born in Louisville, KY on Feb. 24, 1939; he was the only son of William Thomas Mason, Sr. and Gladys Loring Van Hooser Mason. He passed on Sept. 4, 2019 at the age of 80. He is survived by his wife, Nancy Graves Mason; his two sons, William Powell Mason and Thomas Graves Mason and their wives and children; and his two sisters, Barbara Kay Parrish and Frances Lynn Gibson. He grew up in Louisville, KY and graduated in 1961 from the University of Louisville with a bachelor's degree in zoology. He earned a master's degree in zoology at Tulane University in 1963. He devoted his career to environmental work on aquatic invertibrates in freshwater and estuarine ecosystems throughout the United States. During his career, he worked for the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Interstate Commission on the Potomac River Basin, and the U.S. Department of the Interior's Fish and Wildlife Service. In 1987, he served on the President's Commission on Americans Outdoors under President Reagan's administration. He was a founder and president of the North American Benthological Society (NABS). An avid tennis player throughout his life, Bill had a University of Louisville tennis scholarship during his undergraduate years. He also enjoyed playing guitar, particularly bluegrass, as well as oil painting and photography.
