Louise Broaddus

October 1, 2020

Louise E. Broaddus, age 96, passed away October 1, 2020 at the McGraw Center for Caring Hospice facility in Jacksonville, Florida. She was born December 20, 1923 in Memphis, Tennessee, to Lois and Lizzie Howington. Louise was married on June 10, 1950, to Robert L. Broaddus, who preceded her in death in 2004.

After graduation from Whitehaven High School in Memphis, Louise worked for several years at Sears and the Army Depot in Memphis. She then ventured to Miami, Florida, where she worked for Pan American Airlines. Her sense of adventure again got the best of her and she moved to New York City where she became a fashion model for the couturier Maison Burano on Fifth Avenue. She recounted the excitement of modeling for wealthy heiresses, royalty and movie stars, entering the shop with their bodyguards to purchase custom fashions. After returning to Memphis, she worked as an executive secretary for HUMCO Corporation and later for the Memphis City School system at Northside and Frayser schools. Upon retirement, she and her husband moved to Punta Gorda, Florida, where they enjoyed boating, fishing and the Florida lifestyle. Louise moved to Jacksonville Florida, to live with her daughter and son-in-law in 2015.

Louise was a dedicated mother first and foremost. She treasured her children, Robert Broaddus, of Arlington Tennessee, and Linda Phillips of Jacksonville, Florida, along with her son-in-law, Hays Phillips. Louise is also survived by her granddaughter, Ashley (Brian) Curtwright, two great grandchildren, Brady and Nora Curtwright of Manila, Arkansas, and one sister, Jannie Dixon of San Antonio, Texas.

Louise will be remembered for her love of her family and many friends. Her generous spirit and infectious passion for life made her admired and loved by all who knew her.
