Helen Mitchell

Helen Mitchell passed away on February 1, 2021 in Ponte Vedra, Florida. She was a young 88 years. Helen was born on August 27, 1932 in Riverside Connecticut, the second child of Luciano and Rosa Micieli from Rose, Italy. She grew up in Riverside with her older brother Mike among a large extended family and many friends.

A woman ahead of her time, Helen’s first job was typing scripts for radio soaps; Stella Dallas and Backstage Wife at the Greenwich Town Hall. After graduating Greenwich High School in 1950, Helen worked for the Electric Specialty Company and then Baldwin-Gegenheimer Corporation, now Baldwin Technologies, in Stamford CT. At Baldwin, Helen worked her way up from Secretary to the Founding Partner, to Head of Personnel. She was well-respected throughout her career and held her own when women in positions of power were rare. In 1996, Helen retired and moved to Clearwater, Florida where she spent many happy years. Helen would eventually move to Ponte Vedra, Florida spending time there with family.

Throughout her life she was an avid supporter of the Arts and had a deep love of New York City. A season ticket holder to the Metropolitan Opera, Tosca remained her favorite. Always generous to a fault, Helen introduced generations of her family to Broadway theater, ballet, symphony and opera. She was instrumental in shaping their appreciation for all.

Helen was a seasoned traveler at a time when it was not commonplace for women. She traveled to Egypt, Greece, Brazil, the Caribbean and family trips to Bethany Beach, Cape Cod and California. A movie buff and solid tennis player she never missed watching Wimbledon or the U.S. Open. Helen was also a forty-year fan of Days of Our Lives, an avid reader and an excellent cook.

Throughout her life Helen had a close-knit circle of friends. She was known as Aunt Helen to many and is survived by the Lenihans, the Fosters and the Zebroskis of Florida, the Shockleys of Florida and California and the Croccos of Texas and California.

We will all miss her easy-going nature and kind-hearted presence and will hold her memory in our hearts with love.
