Thomas Thornton

October 17, 2021

Thomas Robert Thornton of Tallahassee died on Sunday, October 17th, 2021 at the home of his brother, after a battle with cancer.

Tom was born on September 22, 1953, in Jacksonville, Florida. He was the eldest son of Wesley Thornton and Nancy Powell Thornton (formerly of Havana, FL), and was educated in Jacksonville, where he lived the early years of his life. Tom and his family were very involved in their churches, First Baptist Church of Jacksonville and Neptune Beach Baptist Church.

Tom was an active and a mischievous little boy. He spent many hours playing in the surf at Jacksonville Beach with his brothers, traveling about the country with his family, and visiting in Concord with his grandmother, Nancy Warlick, and other relatives.

Tom worked for an electrical supply company in Jacksonville. He later moved to Tallahassee, where he was employed by Goodwill Industries Big Bend for almost 18 years as the purchasing agent. He continued to work past retirement age because he enjoyed his work and his many friends  at Goodwill.

Tom is survived by his brother, and sister-in-law, Steve and Lisa Thornton, of Jacksonville Beach, FL, a niece, Samantha Thornton Miller (husband Nick), of Jacksonville Beach; a nephew, Zach Thornton of Jacksonville Beach, a sister-in-law, Sylvia Thornton of Dothan, AL, and niece Katie Thornton Phillips (husband Joshua) of Flomaton, AL, and a nephew, Wesley Thornton (wife Dervon) of Arlington, VA, and an Aunt, Donna Warlick of Woodville, FL. He will be greatly missed by his cousins in the Tallahassee area: Angela Boynton Cassidy, Nora Boynton Bobek, and Ben H. Boynton. Tom is also survived by Thornton cousins Robert, Brian, Scott and Debbie, and a special friend/supervisor, Lisa Land of Goodwill.

Tom was predeceased by his parents and younger brother, Rev. Allen Thornton of Columbia, AL.

Memorial donations can be made to Vickers Cemetery, Inc., 252 Bob Miller Road, Crawfordville, FL 32327.

  1. It was such a pleasure working with Tom for the past 16 years. He became more like family than a co-worker. Tom even drove me to my wedding with my bridal party. He will be truly missed by his Goodwill Family!
