Gerald Charles Platt

Sergeant Gerald Charles Platt, 84, passed away peacefully surrounded by family at Hospice of Marion County on Monday, October 18th, 2021. Jerry was a decorated veteran who served four tours in the Vietnam War and spent 22 years in active duty.

Jerry was born on November 02, 1936 in Adrian, MI. He graduated from Adrian High School. He went on to college in Texas and got his Bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Technology. He joined the Army in 1954 where he served the next 22 years earning the rank of Sargent first class, Soldier’s Medal, Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal w/60 Device, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry w/ Palm, Combat Medical Badge, Master Parachutist Badge, Meritorious Unit Citation, and VCSF Honor Jump Wings. After leaving the service, he met his loving wife and friend while working at Leesburg Regional Medical Center in Leesburg, FL. He and his wife were happily married for 43 years and eventually settling in Weirsdale, FL where they lived for 29 years. He was a devoted husband, loving father, and grandfather. He loved boating, fishing, dancing, drinking beer, and telling jokes. His tough exterior could not hide his huge heart and kind generous spirit. He was a brave and honorable soldier and dedicated his life to helping others and spending time with his family. Jerry was the son of the late Floyd George Platt & Evelyn G. Platt, and was preceded in death by his son Robert (Scotty) Scott Peebles.

He is survived by his loving wife Irma Mae; 2 Sons – Robert D. Platt and Steven C. Platt (Deborah); 3 Daughters – Sharon L. Browning (David), Sandra L. Telesca (Charlie), and Catherine E. Babbitt; 9 Grandchildren – Jeremy Platt, Joseph Platt, Ashley Newton, Mitchell Brown, Matthew Brown, Michael Brown, Amy Babbitt, Ashley Peebles, and Andrew Babbitt Jr.; 10 Great-Grandchildren.
