Carol Woloson

December 28, 2021

Carol Herriott Woloson, 80 died peacefully on Tuesday, December 28, 2021 at home in Ponte Vedra, Florida. Carol is survived by Bart D. Woloson, her husband of 60 years and their children Jane, Todd (Eliza), and Bradford (Crickett); and her grandchildren, Hannah and Parker Kelley, Isabelle and Audrey Woloson, Courtney Woloson, and Crinny, Dodge and Oscar Woloson. She was predeceased by her brother, Bill Herriott and son Kent Woloson.

Cute Carol was easily recognizable by her bright blue eyes and broad, open smile. She approached friendship like other people drink water, naturally and fully. Entering a room with infectious energy and light, Carol made friends in the blink of an eye. Her ability to connect with others was remarkable and infinite. Smart, kind, caring, thoughtful and full of zest, Carol made her wide circle of family and friends’ days and lives better.

Born and raised in Beverly, on the south side of Chicago, Carol admired her father who died too young, and was a lifelong sidekick to her gregarious older brother, Bill. A cheerleader at Morgan Park High School and a candy striper at Little Company of Mary Hospital, Carol was always surrounded by people. Several of her childhood pals still meet at their nationally scattered homes annually. She loved her growing-up summers in Lakeside, Michigan and years as a college student and Alpha Phi member at DePauw, University of Saltillo (in Mexico) and Elmira Colleges.

Carol and Bart built a wonderful life for themselves and their children in Lake Forest, IL. Carol left her touch on each organization in which she was involved. She was active in Lake Forest Country Day School, the Lake Forest Hospital Women’s Board, the Junior League, the Lake Forest Garden Club and at the Brookfield Zoo. She built community at every opportunity: school and sports carpools, “Wacky Wednesday” in Saugatuck, MI, “Tennis / Wine Group” in Lake Forest, IL, white water rafting, “Thirsty Thursday” and “Breakfast Club” in Ponte Vedra, FL, as well as through book clubs and sharing book recommendations, investment club, the Harpies, Twelfth Night Masque Ball, cooking school in France, and with her neighbors in Hathaway Circle, Sylvan Shores and Sawgrass.

All that entered Carol’s door felt connected. She led with her heart and accepted and loved everyone for exactly who they are. Her friends and family felt seen, appreciated and loved. Carol shared her infinite passion through full plates and full glasses. Wherever she lived was warm, inviting and welcoming. Traditions such as Christmas Eve dinners for her large extended family were especially meaningful. Cocktail hour was an excuse to deepen friendships over chardonnay or her favorite, scotchie-watchie.

Carol traveled adventurously, including family trips to Breckenridge and Desbarats, 25 years of January trips, and many, many return trips to her favorite city, Paris. Cooking was a common way of connecting. Carol planned meals with friends and shared recipes, food hacks, and ingredient secrets. On cooking trips with friends, fun and adventure took on equal importance to cooking.

Always incredibly thoughtful and generous, Carol was known for sending themed messages to friends and family – each featuring her in a different hat or costume, but always with the same beautiful smile. She also sent colorful and delicious cookies on special occasions and never failed to have gifts awaiting on the pillows of her visiting grandchildren and taught them all the art of playing lambsie.

In any role Carol held in her life, whether daughter, partner, sibling, cousin, mother or grandmother, she was always a friend. Carol was loved wildly by all those around her. Friends like her are hard to find and we celebrate her like she showed us how to live – with adventures, love of life, kindness and laughter.

Community Hospice and Palliative Care took beautiful care of Carol in the final days of her struggle with cancer. She passed away peacefully with family. She will be remembered as a fun and devoted friend.
