James L. Love

May 4, 1935 ~ November 6, 2022

James L. Love "Jim", 87, of Jacksonville, FL was born in Jefferson County, Alabama on May 4, 1935 and  passed away on Sunday November 6, 2022.  He is survived by his wife, Karen; brother Donald Love (Vivian); former wife Linda and their children Rita Jewell (Ben), Lamar, and David Love; grandsons Michael and Nicholas Jewell; brother-in-law Buster Lancaster (Suzanne); and nephews Adam and Andrew Lancaster.

He was preceded in death by his parents Lloyd and Winnie Love; brothers Perry, Jerry, Sonny, and Billy Love; and sisters Martha Ellen Miles and Shelby Snow.

As a child, his family was known as the "Love Family Singers."  They drove all around North Alabama, singing gospel music. The management of insurance agencies took him to Atlanta, GA and then to Jacksonville, FL. Jim retired as nursery manager after 25 years from the Proctor Ace Store on University Blvd.  He loved his customers and their children.  He would tell the children, "I don't work in the nursery, I play in the dirt!"  All children were given a plant from "Jim's Kids Corner."  He would teach them how to care for the plant, in hopes they would come to love gardening.  Jim spoke to many of The Garden Club of Jacksonville circles. His "cut and slash" program was most requested.

Jim was an honorary life member of the Men's Garden Club.  In 2013, he presented the idea for the club to start the aloe vera project, giving a plant to radiation patients in pain.  The project has been a tremendous success.  In 2013, Jim's plant won best in show at the Jacksonville Agricultural fair.

He loved all aspects of baseball from coaching to watching it on television.  He especially rooted for any team playing against the Yankees. Jim enjoyed fishing with his best buddy, Steve Blajain; they went fishing, not catching. Jim had a special friendship with Dr. Bob and Bill W. for 35 years.

Guestbook

  1. Jim was the driving force that kept the Men's Garden Club of Jacksonville continuing its plant sales at the Jacksonville Agricultural Fair for many more years that it would have without his constant attention to getting plants and his encouragement of the club's members to pot up plant for the sale. Jim's contribution of plants allowed the club to fund 4H Scholarships and Boy Scouts horticultural projects among others projects. Jim was at his best when he was instructing people how to propagate plants, especially the succulents he loved so much. Jim will be greatly missed by all of us the Men's Garden Club & his regular customers at Ace.

  2. Uncle James and his family stories, amazing wealth of plant knowledge, and especially his quirky Love family sense of humor, are already missed terribly. Some of the great blessings of our lives were visits and conversations with him. We love and treasure our Florida family and are praying for you all!  Ron and Kim

  3. Dear Karen,hi !i just now discovered Jim has passed.I am so sorry dear lady.you and your mom Martha Lancaster are myfavorite people.I pray you will be comforted by happy memories of Jim.Love you dear friend.

  4. I am so sorry to hear of Jim's passing. He was a kind and generous person, who I first met while undergoing cancer treatment in the mid 90s. After my doctor' appointments I would visit the nursery to bring some peace to my soul. Jim unfailingly lifted my spirits, sharing gems about his new plants and kindly ignoring my headscarf.
Over the years I continued to pop in and chat with him about all sorts of things, but above all plants, of course, and the succulents he was so very knowledgeable about. I still have one of his Agave americana, bought at the Garden Club many years ago. Its offsets have flowered several times and it never ceases to amaze me.
He must be sorely missed by his family and friends. I am sorry for your loss.
    RIP, Mr. Jim.

  5. Jim was the highlight of my visits to Ace. He knew everything about plants and loved to share his knowledge.  He was always pleasant and helpful and is greatly missed by me and my family.
