Charles South

December 2, 1943 ~ November 22, 2022

Charlie Benjamin South returned home to his Heavenly Father on Tuesday, November 22, 2022. He was born December 02, 1943 in San Antonio, Texas. He is the son of Dudley P. South and Irene South, who preceded him in death. He married Iris Arlene Cardona on May 21, 1978.

He lived in Austin, TX and DeQuincy, LA, where he graduated from DeQuincy High School and then attended Centenary College of Louisiana.

Charlie was introduced to airplanes by his father, Dudley South, and quickly developed a passion for flying. He became a professional airline pilot and began his aviation career flying commercial airplanes such as the BAC 111, Boeing 737, Boeing 747 and L-1011. His first commercial job was with TACA International Airlines. He later offered his services to the government where he was commissioned to fly equipment during Operation Desert Storm. He finished his career as President of Operations for FineAir Airlines.

During his career, Charlie moved his family to Pembroke Pines, Florida, where he and his wife, Iris, raised their two children, Irene Da Costa (South) and Charles South.

Charlie had many other passions, but especially loved golf and motorcycles. He became a golf pro in Bell Terre, Louisiana, where he taught many “the perfect golf swing.” During his life, he owned many different bikes, including a Boss Hoss, Gold Wing and his beloved Harley Davidson. He enjoyed biking with his buddies up and down Alligator Alley and being a part of Daytona Bike Week.

He had a natural gift for making friends with people of all ages. Children especially loved talking with him because of his ability to listen. He could make anyone feel comfortable and welcome and could engage in wonderful conversations with complete strangers who easily felt his warmth and loving personality. He also had great love for animals and animals, in return, loved him. Charlie was loved by many and will be greatly missed.

He is survived by his wife, Iris Arlene South, his children, Irene Nicole Da Costa (South), Occoe, FL, Charles Prichett South, NY, and four wonderful grandchildren.
