Barbra Lee Mattson (nee Miller), of Gainesville, Fl, passed away peacefully at home on Christmas Eve morning, December 24, 2022. Her health had been declining over this year and was recently placed under the care of Haven Hospice home services.
She was born March 10, 1937, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the daughter of the late Duane S. Miller and the Late Oliverne M. Miller (nee Sutton), primarily growing up in Cambria County, PA. She was an Ebensburg Cambria High School graduate (ECHS) Class of 1955. She attended Cumberland County Community College in Vineland, NJ. She worked at Owens-Illinois in Bridgeton, NJ, Deerfield Township School and Cumberland County College in New Jersey and retired from the University of Florida Libraries in Gainesville FL.
She enjoyed traveling back to PA for family reunions, genealogy, and her ECHS class of 1955 reunions. Her interests were Art, Genealogy, American History and Folklore. She did artwork throughout her life and was in a Mother-Daughter show at Cumberland County College, NJ. Many of her grands and great-grandchildren enjoyed receiving handmade cards from their “Gram”.
She belonged to the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR) and the local chapter Gainesville DAR. Additionally, she was a member of Crawford County Historical Society, Cambria County Historical Society, Somerset Historical Society, all in Pennsylvania and the Salem County NJ Historical Society.
As a child she was raised Catholic, as an adult, she was Lutheran, into her elder years, returned to her Catholic beliefs but spoke highly of both religions.
She is survived by four children, Frank Edward (Cindy) Mattson of Johnstown, PA, Oliverne M. Mattson who she resided with in Gainesville, FL, Christine A. Sutton of Jacksonville, Fl, and William Edward (Phyllis) Mattson, Jr of Melrose, Fl; 5-grandchildren Joshua Lee (Ashlie) Mattson of St. Augustine, FL, Thomas W. Sutton and Colt Simon (Stephanie) Sutton of Jacksonville, Fl, Vanessa (Gian) Francalangia of Cary, NC, and Kelly Dale (Jaime) Orozco of Yuma, Az; Eleven great grandchildren: Joshua Lee Mattson Jr., Aidan Michael Mattson, Jeremy Knorr Mattson, Adelina Michele Sutton, Dannaleigh Rose Sutton, Thomas William Sutton Jr.; Colt Simon Sutton Jr., Zoe Jade Sutton, Storm H. L. Sutton; Allison Paige Orozco, and Emilia June Orozco; two siblings, James D. (Kay) Miller of Adams, TN, Joanne (Daniel) Parrish of Exton, PA, and by many nieces and nephews. Special mention, Velvet her toy poodle and companion.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Duane and Oliverne Sutton Miller; husband William (Bill) Edward Mattson, Sr.; sisters Marjorie Bopp, Mary Lou Reed, and brother baby Joseph Miller, and grandson, Jeremy Henrik Mattson.
Her remains will be taken back to Western PA later for private interment at a family cemetery. There will be no public viewing or service at the familys request.
In lieu of flowers, my mother suggested that memorial contributions be made to a local historic society of your choosing or to the Daughters or Sons of the American Revolution (DAR/SAR) organizations
