William "Bill" Douglas Smith II

July 1, 1953 ~ October 4, 2023

Born July 1, 1953, in Danville Illinois, was called home to our Lord on Wednesday, October 4, 2023, at his home in Crescent City, FL.  He was surrounded by his wife and soul mate of 46 years Mary, his two daughters Sherre, and Shannon and his brother Mark.

Bill was a valued and decorated employee of CSX Transportation for 41 years.  He began his career with CSX in Danville, Illinois as a clerk.  As his career advanced Bill and his family made several moves to many different states. Which included Florence, SC as Assistant Trainmaster, Portsmouth, VA as Trainmaster, Hamlet, NC as Assistant Terminal Superintendent, Rocky Mount, NC as Terminal Manager, Jacksonville, FL as Regional Manager of Field Administration.  Bill retired in 2013 as the General Manager of Field Administration in Jacksonville, FL.

Bill was a very well respected, strong, wise, kind, generous, witty and loving man.  He had a huge love for his family, friends, music, Chicago Bears, his lake home.  He also enjoyed car hobbies with his 1966 Thunderbird and 1949 Chevrolet Truck. He will be remembered for his teasing jokes, his unfailing work ethic, his infectious smile, his gentleness, his willingness to always be there and his ability to do it his way where he made sure we all knew it.

Bill is preceded in death by his parents William D. Smith I and Beverly Smith and his son William Smith III.

His memory will be cherished and kept alive by his wife Mary A Smith of Crescent City, FL, daughters Sherre Conway (Christopher Conway) of Orange Park FL, Shannon Smith (Tom Cooper) of Braselton, GA., and younger brother Mark Smith (Suzanne Smith) of Crescent City, FL.  Grandchildren Evan Gainey of Havre De Grace, MD, John and Raygan Cooper of Braselton, GA.  Daughter-in-law Amanda Smith of Orange Park FL, and his beloved but not so loving kitty, Callie.

  5. I met  Bill in Florence SC 1983.  He and Trainmaster Sydney Lorick were my guidance in my 20’s.  They were a hoot together.  I’m on my off days and met a nice gal at a dance club.  We were at a local breakfast place and in comes Bill & Sydney messing with me about my date.  They said “red” you’re to pretty for her. We’ll get her a cab home for you.  I never was let up on about that night.  Many times, Bill watched out for me in my younger days.  We crossed paths many times in our career.  Always, a professional gentleman that was surely witty with a big smile that I’ll never forget.  So sorry for you all’s loss. Prayers & thoughts are with the family.
