Omerea "Mimi" Herring

October 24, 2023

Omerea “Mimi” Herring illuminated the world with her kindness and resilience. She was born to Omerea “Rusty” Thomas and David Etherington on June 12, 1953 in Gainesville, FL. While she grew up vision-impaired, she never let it slow her down. She spent her formative years traveling the world as an Army brat. Once her father retired from the Army, their family settled down in Gainesville, FL. She enjoyed showing dogs and horses, cheering on her siblings in sports, and time at the beach.

Following graduation from high school, she attended LaGrange College in GA where she graduated with an associate degree in Nursing (AND). She specialized in pediatrics during her decades-long nursing career. Many families would write notes of appreciation for her exemplary care and compassion.

Her motto was “If there’s a will there’s a way”, which webbed into the fabric of every part of her life. She was able to move mountains for her kids - finding rides, tutoring, and scholarships when times were tough. This joyful spirit was present in all phases of life. Nothing made her happier than spending time with her 3 children. She enjoyed many travel adventures, nights around the fire, late night wake-up calls which she endured with annoyance followed by happiness, long car rides, and loudly cheering on the Florida Gators.

Mimi’s radiant smile reflected the warmth within, and her unique gift for forging connections shone brightly. Her genuine curiosity about individuals made each person feel truly special. Mimi went beyond family bonds, remembering the birthdays of her children’s friends, turning acquaintance into cherished extensions of her own family.

Mimi was a legend with a servant’s heart and volunteered with many organizations throughout her life which included Prairie View Elementary (Volunteer of the Year), Cold Night Shelter, Malcom Randall VAMC, and Evergreen Cemetery.

She is survived by her three adult children: Omerea Katherine Solis (Jeff), Gerald Neal Herring IV (Anna), Joseph Murray Herring (Amy); her grandchildren: Meredith, Elizabeth, Gracie, McKenzie, and Micah; her siblings: David, Keith, Cynthia, and Timmy; plus many other friends and loved ones.

Mimi’s legacy will forever shine in the hearts she left behind. a Celebration of Life will take place. Please contact the First United Methodist Gainesville (419 N.E. 1st Street, Gainesville, FL 32601) or the Family for date and time of service.

Guestbook

  1. Sister we share many adventures good and bad together. Every time I returned to Gainesville you made a point to visit and always wanted to take me somewhere of my choosing. You were furiously loyal and I often teased you of it being "Top Secret on the topic. I have loved you to your last breath. And I can hardly wait until I see you again in Heaven. Whoever is reading this, If Jesus Christ is your Saviour, you too will see Mimi again.

  2. Our heart goes out to my dearest friend and her family in these trying times! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

  3. When I think of Mimi, a lot of things come to mind: fighter, courage, strength, love, support, kind and compassionate. Mimi never had a lot but never complained. She never let her vision slow her down or become an obstacle that she could not overcome. She will always be an inspiration to me. The way she fought her battle with cancer is nothing short of remarkable. Mimi never complained or said why me? She always wanted to know what Caitlyn, Grace and Wendy were up to. I have a giant whole in my heart that will take some time to heal. Mimi will always have a very special place in my heart that will never go away.

One think I know for sure, Mimi has made Heaven a better place.

  4. Mimi, was truly a blessing to know when Mike served in Gainesville. I’m so glad we were able to find each other on Facebook.

Our thoughts and prayers to all who mourn her passing. A light has gone out in Gainesville.

We were so sorry to read about her passing. Love and prayers,
    Mike & Sandy Shockley

  5. Jake, Katherine, and Joseph,
I am heartbroken for each of you as I know how much your Mother adored each of you! I shared some fun times with your Mom-obviously from our arrival in Gainesville and First United Methodist Church we connected as we watched our children grow up together. I know you remember choir tours, mission trips, and more. Mimi and I shared our love of nursing and our love of our animals, especially horses and dogs. I remember the fellowship and positivity of her health challenges when I brought her some soup when she was recovering at Katherine’s. Never a mention of poor me but grateful for her life and her faith which guided her daily. Her beautiful smile and heart will be remembered by all who knew her. Love to each of you and please know you are in my thoughts and prayers.

  6. Katherine, Josse has told me what an incredibly devoted daughter you were to her mother. While these have been difficult months leading up to her passing, you have been there for her in ways few others ever could or would. The obituary that you wrote is beautiful and a real tribute to her.

Please know that my thoughts are with you during these most difficult times. I hope that you will find comfort in the loving memories that you will always have of your mother. Sending you hugs from afar.

  7. We will miss your smile and good humour as the Etherington clan gathers from time to time, our connection was brief but memorable, may you rest in peace remembering the joy and love of family and friends. Thank you for your wonderful children who are doing so well.

  8. I will forever be grateful, to have known such a caring woman. She never hesitated to voice her concerns about us teenagers, years ago. She cared about all us, kids…not just her own. Her love will forever live on and multiply, in her family and all the lives she has touched. I will always be grateful, for her gifting this world, Katherine. She definitely passed on, that pure joyful heart. We can all agree, "she get it from her Mama."
Sending love and prayers for strength and grace, to you all.

  9. We are so sad to hear this!  Mimi was so kind to everyone.  Until we see you again, Mimi, rest in peace.

  10. Moomie was a beautiful spirit both inside and out. She most definitely made all feel as though they were a part of her extended family. Her love, curiosity and laughter will be greatly missed. Many blessings, prayers and hugs for the family. Moomie made us feel like family and we definitely feel like the Herrings are a part of our family.
