Asa G. Maynard

November 24, 2023

TD1 Asa G. Maynard, raconteur extraordinaire, told his last earthly story to a hospital nurse where he passed on into the ultimate green pastures November 24, 2023. After struggling for over three years with dialysis, he left peacefully, holding hands with his last love, and forever partner, Gail Lucinda.

Born in Decatur, Ga in 1936, to Asa G., Sr. and Ruth Maynard, he grew up during the Great Depression and WWII. After spending 2 decades traveling in the US Navy, he retired to Jacksonville, Florida, where, 33 years ago, in 1990, he and Gail had several conversations over the phone and decided to marry before actually meeting each other. They spent summers in Rumford, Me., and recently in Green Mountain NC. They kept ties with their huge extended family during the winter in White Springs, Fl.

Asa was an only child, but his father was one of fifteen. Needless to say, he was undoubtedly met on the other side by an entourage, including his parents, his son Michael, his beloved dog, Buttercup, a myriad of Maynard aunts, uncles, cousins, the grandparents he never met, 2 ggrand babies, and plenty of in-laws, outlaws, and possibly ex-wives. Asa was “one of the good guys”, who never met a stranger and treated everyone kindly, with respect. He had a way of making everyone he met feel “seen”. His stories always brought a smile.

He has gone on ahead of his wife, Gail, his children Tim (Cara), Paul, Tanya (Bobby), step children, Chris (Karen), Rachael (Roy), Danielle, Philip, and Eric, 16 grands, and 7 ½ greatgrands.

  1. Asa Jr. was one of my very few boy cousins growing up, he and Don Maynard were friends as children, His father Uncle Geeter was the life of the party at any event, especially Reunions at Grant Park, heard uncle Geeter when I got out of the car, he and Aunt Ruth laughing over everyone and Don, Junior and I were only waiting to play ball with the grownups. My first bike a 26'' Schwinn hand me down from asa, he came over to show me how to ride it. I didn't get to see Asa as much as I would have liked to, but I will miss him and forever be in my favorite childhood thoughts.
