Dr. Richard H. Schultz, age 94 of Gainesville, FL, passed away peacefully at his home on Jan.20th, 2024. Born in Neenah, Wisconsin, he was the oldest son of the late Dr. Henry Schultz and Vernette Schultz. He is a graduate of Wisconsin State University (B.S.), Applachian State University (M.A.), and Duke University (Ed.D. in Educational Administration). He served in the U.S. Army with the 43rd Armored Infantry.
He was an educator his entire life -- a high school teacher and coach (FL), and a state supervisor (NC). He was elected as the Superintendent of Rockingham County Schools (NC) for 16 years and then served as a graduate professor of Education at East Carolina University for 6 years. In NC, he was also active in Rotary, the United Way, the Rockingham County Board of Health, and served on the Planning Board of Pine Knoll Shores, NC, and was a Town Commissioner.
Richard was an avid sailor—he started racing Lightning sailboats as a young man in Wisconsin on Lake Winnebago and then also raced Windmill sailboats. He purchased “Ghost,” his beloved Flying Scot racing boat in the 1970s. For 40 years he annually won numerous regional and state sailing regattas with Ghost (the NC Governor’s Cup, the Midwinters, the Oriental Sailing Regatta and Social, the Blackbeard Regatta, VISA-Virginia Intercoastal Sailing Association Regatta, High Rock Regatta, Carolinas District Championship, Shanghai Challenge, etc.), and enjoyed making and maintaining sailing friends across the country. He loved his family, his boat “Ghost,” the Green Bay Packers, and Duke basketball—in that order.
Dr. Schultz is survived and will be missed by his loving wife of 67 years, Nancy Perryman Schultz, his children: Rick Schultz, James Schultz, and Nan Thornqvist, and his 4 grandchildren (Maclaine, Whitney, Josef, and Zoie).

Condolences to all the members of the Schultz family. Did not have much encounters with Mr. Richard but was a great, happy man every time I crossed paths. He loved his Green Bat Packers and Duke Blue Devils which is rivaled to James favorite college team, North Carolina Tar Heels. May you rest in peace, Sir.

Dad,
You were a great father. In my early years I didn’t know it but now that I look back you were. The sailing trips you used to take me on, when I was young, sometimes they were fun, sometimes not. However I didn’t realize until later how much it meant spending all those hours with you. Talking about sailing,  or my future in the military, or just life.Â
You gave me the love of our beloved Green Bay Packers. I loved calling you up after a game to talk about it. Or telling you about my experiences with Gina at the various games we attended.Â
We will miss you Dad……you are in our thoughts and prayers….love you

Grandpa was an amazing man. He was extremely supportive and excited at the thought of me also becoming a teacher. He helped me learn how to mow the lawn (not well unfortunately) and how to sail a boat (before I capsized it). It has been a hard year on him with his health getting worse but we can take comfort in how he is with God now. I love you grandpa and I will miss you.
First and foremost, condolences to the family. You are all in my prayers through this difficult time. I did not know Mr. Richard Schultz but I felt like I did with all the stories I’ve heard from James. He talked so fondly about you and that showed me how great of a father you were. I would also like to thank you for raising James to the man he is today, for being a great husband to my mom Gina. Seeing them happy and also hearing their stories when they visit you guys in Florida just warms my heart with all the joy that you all shared. One thing I have learned about Mr. Schultz is that he loved sending greeting cards but you better send him one back or else…. All jokes aside, I’ll continue to pray for the family and ask God to give you strength and peace during this time.Â
with love, Patrick
My condolences to the family. Dr Schultz was a great person who had a heart of gold. He has been a customer of mine for 4 years and was a pleasure to work with. He was always vibrant and full energy. This is heartfelt for me as I look forward to speaking with him when it was time for his renewal or anytime he calls the office. It was a joy to speak with him. He will be missed.
Condolences to the family; Dr. Schultz was a very nice man and respected educator. He allowed me to sail with him in a race with my good friend Rick when I was about 9 or 10 I think. Very exciting and scary at the same time.
