Carolyn Louise Schreiber, 80, of Live Oak, Florida passed away on January 28th at her home surrounded by her loving family. Family describes Carolyn as an extraordinarily independent human being with staunch views of the world and a selfless passion to help her husband, children, grandchildren and friends.
Carolyn is survived by her children, John Schreiber, Stacey Daniels and James Schreiber, and her grandchildren Jamie and Jesse Krasnow.
Carolyn was born on October 30, 1943 to Watson and Emily Ward in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Carolyn’s father died young, leaving her mother Emily, older sister Sarah and younger brothers Nicki, Denny, Timmy and Ronald with little means to support themselves. Carolyn eventually ended up dropping out of high school to work in a factory for a while in order to make ends meet. She said the other ladies in the factory were shocked at her youth. After a somewhat harrowing teenage experience helping to support her family, she ended up moving into an apartment with her sister and finishing high school at night as an adult. Her educational experience included some college courses and a Data Entry Operations Certificate Program at the Associated Business Careers School, Collingswood, New Jersey.
In 1966, Carolyn met Frank Schreiber at the Honeydew nightclub in New Jersey and she fell in love. The Honeydew meeting was a story that she often retold sharing details of that night. They were married shortly thereafter on September 9, 1967 and remained together, working as a team through all of life’s ups and downs. They celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary on October 9th, 2022.
In 1978, Carolyn convinced Frank to volunteer for a lateral transfer with AT&T to Hollywood, Florida thus becoming Floridians for 46 years. Carolyn and Frank bought a house with a swimming pool in Hollywood, Florida where they raised their three children. By the end of the seventies, Carolyn started work again after being a stay-at-home mom. From 1980 and well into the 90s, Carolyn had several work experiences in South Florida, including GDG Services, Inc., Pompanette Inc. and at Coca Cola Bottling of Pembroke Pines as a computer operations supervisor.
During the eighties, Carolyn insisted that the family buy a large cargo van, a home video camera and rent pop-up campers, eventually purchasing a little camper in order to spend quality time and create lasting memories with kids. There were camping trips to Fisheating Creek near lake Okeechobee, Lion Country Safari in West Palm Beach, and road trips up the east coast from South Florida to New Jersey to visit relatives. Once on a camping trip to Black Top Mountain, one of the steepest mountains in the United States, the kids piled into the pop-up trailer and all went to the same side where Carolyn was sitting on the bed. Her husband Frank was outside setting up the camper but had forgotten to install the supports to keep it from tipping over to one side. Consequently, the pop-up camper literally popped up into the air with all of the belongings, including a cooler filled with drinks, tumbling onto the kids and Carolyn. Frank knew what had occurred but everyone on the inside thought they had begun their descent down the mountain. This shared experience is one that the family was able to look back on and laugh. It’s a perfect example of the memories Carolyn had hoped to create. Carolyn and Frank shared a somewhat cynical world view but along with their sarcastic sense of humor they got along quite well discussing topics ranging from the day’s events to world events and politics.
Crevasse's Simple Cremation is honored to serve the Schreiber Family.
