Norma Joan Edgar

N. Joan Egerton Edgar passed away peacefully on April 24, 2025 after a long residency at Magnolia Ridge in Gainesville. Born in 1929 in Waterloo, Quebec, Canada, her childhood was spent in that rural community outside Montreal. Her father was an Episcopal rector and, after she attended the Royal Victoria School of Nursing, her family immigrated to the U.S. where her father led a parish in Hasbrook Heights New Jersey.

In 1950, Joan met and later married her lifelong love Allen C. Edgar and they settled in Gainesville. She became active in local organizations including the Junior Woman’s Club, Friends of Music, Gainesville Chamber Orchestra, Florida State Museum, and the PEO Sisterhood. After raising three sons, international travels and a successful real estate career kept her busy.

The last of her generation, she was predeceased by her husband and her youngest son, Douglas Edgar. She is survived by her remaining two sons, David (Robin) Edgar and Dwight (Maureen) Edgar and her grandchildren Anna (Mike) Herrick, Valentina (Troy) Kelly, Alexndra and Nicole (JB) Edgar. Also survived by great grandchildren, Emma Herrick and Luca Kelly.

She will be missed by all those who knew and loved her.
