Eric R. Winchester, D.V.M., 83, was born in Jacksonville, Florida, and was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and devoted Jacksonville veterinarian for more than fifty years. He passed away on Tuesday, February 10, 2026.
Eric was a graduate of Lee High School in Jacksonville, The University of Florida at Gainesville, and Auburn University School of Veterinary Medicine in Auburn, Alabama. He founded Julington Creek Animal Hospital in 1975 and later founded Julington Creek Animal Walk, a first of its kind pet resort on the same campus as the animal hospital.
Eric was a lover of fishing, traveling, poetry, family, and all animals for which he dedicated his life to helping. For decades, Eric served the First Coast animal community with dedication and compassion, never meeting an animal he would not help.
Eric is survived by his loving wife of fifty-nine years, Janis Carol Winchester; his children, Eric R. Winchester, Jr (Rod) and Jason James Winchester; his daughters-in-law Shawn and Jamie, his cherished grandchildren, Reef, Kai, Breck, and Lexi, and his sister Eve and brother Scott.
Please contact the family for details on the upcoming celebration of life.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Eric’s memory may be made to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research (https://www.michaeljfox.org) or your favorite animal charity.
Eric will be so deeply missed, and his family is profoundly grateful for the outpouring of love, prayers, and support during this time.

Janis, Rod, and Jason and families,
The O’Quinn family is sending lots of thoughts, prayers, and love your way during this time of grief and healing.
My thoughts and prayers are with the entire family. I met Dr. Winchester just a few times, as I was a member of the animal walk, and he always seemed to be a pleasant man who dearly loved the dogs. All I can say is, God has gained another angel next to his side, and all the animals that Dr. Winchester treated, are running toward him with joy. God bless you all.
Such a amazing man he will be missed greatly
Eve, Rod and the Winchester Family, I am so very sorry for your loss. I met Dr Winchester thirty years ago. I use to work in the same office as Eve in the Gulf Life Tower. One day I told him a problem I was having with my cat Patches and he told me to bring her in to see him and I did! It was the best decision I ever made. Dr. Winchester was a kind, caring and wonderful man. I’ve taken all of my pets to Julington Creek Animal Hospital and I will never go anywhere else. I am again so very sorry for your loss and I am continuing to pray for your family.
Love Stephanie
What we have once enjoyed we can never lose. All that we love deeply becomes a part of us. Know that you are thought of often. Praying for you all today and always. What an honor to have worked for such a special family.

I was lucky enough to have great mentors when I first came out of vet school and started working at Julington Creek. Dr. Winchester for sure being one of them! He was a wealth of knowledge and always there to answer all of my many questions. I remember that great sense of humor as well. Rest in Peace Doc…
R.I.P Love Always 💕
Eric was just a profound influence on our lives. Our deepest sympathy to Janis and the entire family. He will be truly missed.
