Barrett was my dear, dear friend. I was so shocked to read of his death. He and I spoke several times a week and often had three-hour phone conversations about politics, philosophy, movies, literature, and people; in other words, we talked about life. I am heartbroken.
To many he was known as “Miami Joe”. We lived in the same dorm at the University of Illinois in 1969 and remained friends all these years. May he rest in peace.
Barry was my oldest friend. I met him when I moved to Bay Point in Miami around 1961. He and I raised hell in and around Miami when it was the tropical paradise it used to be. His sister Mary was my first crush. I have so many memories of Barry and our mutual friends that lived in and around Bay Point and Miami Beach. I was at his apt. in Coral Gables to watch the first moon landing. He was a great friend. I will miss and remember him always.
