With deep love and gratitude for a life beautifully lived, Bette Lu Hofacker Leeward, 89, peacefully entered into eternal rest on May 20, 2026, after a short illness. Surrounded by the love of her family and held in God’s grace, she leaves behind a legacy of faith, devotion, and joyful hospitality that touched countless lives.
Bette was born on February 17, 1937, in Fort Wayne, Indiana, to Cynthia and Friedrich Hofacker. She was raised alongside her four sisters three of which, Mildred, Alfreida, and Shirley, preceded her in death. Her beloved sister, Hilde, continues to reside in Fort Wayne.
Bette attended Catholic school, where, in the eighth grade, she met the love of her life, James “Jim” Kent Leeward. They were married over 55 years before Jim’s untimely death. Their enduring love story led them both to Indiana University, where Jim took business classes and Bette worked as an administrative assistant in the College of Education. Earlier in her career, she also worked in banking and advertising before fully embracing the role that became her greatest calling — caring for and nurturing her family.
Bette and Jim eventually settled in Ocala, Florida, where they built a beautiful life together and quickly became part of a cherished community of lifelong friends. Bette was an avid sports fan, together they enjoyed cheering on the Florida Gators, flying and traveling the world, family weekends at the lake, Vegas junkets where Bette dominated the Baccarat tables, ski trips and gathering often with those they loved most. Their home was always filled with laughter, warmth, and open doors.
Faith was the cornerstone of Bette’s life. She and Jim were devoted members of Blessed Trinity Catholic Church, where they worshiped faithfully and raised their four children, all of whom attended Blessed Trinity Catholic School. Bette lived her faith not only in church pews, but through the quiet, everyday ways she loved and served others. She was a trusted prayer warrior.
Her family was always her greatest joy and highest priority. Bette was the heart of her home — a devoted wife, loving mother, proud grandmother, and joyful great-grandmother. She was the ultimate homemaker, creating a home where everyone felt welcomed, cared for, and deeply loved. At the same time, she poured herself generously into her community. Over the years, she served as President of the Children’s Service League, was a Scout leader, homeroom mother, active Bible study participant, Garden Club and in the earlier days a team tennis player at Fort King Tennis Center several days a week. She was also known for her gift of hospitality, graciously hosting celebrations, bridge club gatherings, bunco nights, Leward Air Ranch Fly-ins and countless meaningful moments with family and friends.
Bette is survived by her four children: Dirk (wife Donna), Kent (wife Stephani), Tracy (husband Derek), and Chad(partner Katie); her eight beloved grandchildren: Ryan, Allison (Michael), Kylie (DJ), Connor, Hudson (Genevieve), Canon (Amanda), Hollis, and James; and the special blessing of her first great-grandchild, Hayes Elizabeth Kuipers. She is also survived by her loving sister-in-law, Judi Koselka (Bill) and her niece, Laura Poffenberger (Michael and Ayrton); and many cherished nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
While her family grieves the loss of her earthly presence, they find comfort in knowing she is now reunited with Jim and resting peacefully in the arms of her Savior. Her gentle spirit, steadfast faith, and unconditional love will continue to guide and inspire all who were blessed to know her.

You will be missed, many memories over our years of care and friendship. Rest in paradise sweet lady.
So many happy memories of Bette, now reunited with Jim. What a joyful moment, the promise fulfilled.
