Donald Charles Knutson

Donald Charles Knutson, 84, of Trenton, Florida, passed away peacefully on July 16, 2026.

Don was born on July 1, 1942, in Mitchell, South Dakota, to Earland W. Knutson and Edith M. (Daschle) Knutson. He grew up in Huron, South Dakota, where he learned the value of hard work at an early age while working alongside his father at the family’s local custom sign-painting business, Knutson Signs. Don graduated from Huron High School and attended Brookings State University.

Over the years, Don made his home in Minnesota, Ohio, Indiana, Iowa, and Florida. He built a successful career in sales and distribution management, holding leadership positions with RCA Corporation, Whirlpool, and Cornelius. Although he achieved considerable professional success, one of his proudest accomplishments came later in life when he completed his bachelor’s degree, a goal that reflected his lifelong belief that learning never ends.

Don was a man of remarkable intelligence and endless curiosity. He was a devoted student of history, a consummate reader, and an admirer of classical music and the arts. Whether discussing world events, sharing a historical fact, or recommending a great book, he inspired those around him to ask questions, seek knowledge, and never stop learning. His passion for education and travel became one of the greatest gifts he passed on to his children and grandchildren.

Beyond his career, Don found fulfillment in serving others. He volunteered at the Marion Public Library and as a patient visitor at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. A faithful member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Marion, his unassuming generosity, quiet faith, and commitment to helping others remained constants throughout his life.

Above all, Don cherished his family. He was immensely proud of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. To his grandchildren, he was affectionately known as “Grumpy,” a nickname worn with love that reflected both his wit and the deep affection they shared. His intelligence, quick wit, and unwavering interest in the world left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him.

Don is survived by his daughter, Sabra Fiala; his son, Mitchell Knutson and his wife, Angela; and Nina Lisenby, the mother of his children. He also leaves behind his cherished grandchildren, Brittnee Klicic and her husband, Iris, Gabrielle Fiala, Tyler Fiala, Elise Knutson, and Emerson Knutson; his great-grandchildren, Harper Klicic and Harrison Klicic; his nephew, Brady Knutson; and his nieces, Lindsey Knutson and Kimberly (Knutson) Boeve.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Earland and Edith Knutson, and his brothers, Bob and Keith.

A celebration of Don’s life will be held at a later date.

Memorial donations may be made to the Marion Public Library in Marion, Iowa, in his honor.

Guestbook

  1. Don became a larger than life kind of guy in my life in my younger years. We had so many fun adventures with him and the entire family as neighbors in Davenport and even after we moved to Tennessee. Thankfully we remained in touch over the years. Don was always so good at sending encouraging notes thru fb. I cherish that so very much. ~♥︎
I’ve always loved seeing the closeness of the family. The photos of the get togethers… and the love that shown thru time well spent. He leaves his legacy in each of his family members and even thru each friendship.
Thank you so much for sharing so many great times with me. You will always be loved and have a special place in my heart! XoXoXoXo
Nina, Sabra, & Mitch you are in my thoughts and prayers as you navigate this big change in life. Love each of you to the moon and beyond ❤️

  2. When my first book was published, Don purchased it online and asked if he could mail it to me for me to sign it. My first fan! We continued to be online friends and had many interesting conversations through the years – and he continued to buy my books. A big deal to me. He will be missed.

  3. Sabra, I’m so sorry for your loss. Your dad was a good man, and I have a lot of fond memories of the time I spent with your family. I’ll never forget him taking the time to teach me how to shoot a handgun for what I believe was the first time, or sitting together sharing one of his favorite German dark beers—even though I never really acquired the taste for them. Those are memories I’ll always carry with me.

Your mom and dad always made me feel welcome in their home, and I’ll always be grateful for the kindness they showed me. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family during this difficult time. May the many wonderful memories of your dad bring you comfort in the days ahead.

  4. Dear Nina, Sabra, Mitch, and family members, I first met Don at Mitch and Angela‘s wedding in Savannah Georgia. I found him to be very very interesting and knowledgeable in a variety of subjects. He was fun to talk to. The next time was at a wonderful Christmas we all spent at Angela and Mitch’s house in Florida. It remains in my mind as one of the most enjoyable Christmases ever. Due to distances we did not get many more opportunities to visit, but every chance I got, I found him extremely knowledgeable and it was apparent that he had inspired Mitch to exceed the wonderful goals that he has in his life and in Sabra as well. I am sorry for your loss. I know you will all miss him greatly as will the grandchildren who affectionately called him grumpy.
    Love, Joan

  5. I was so deeply saddened to hear about Don’s passing. I always enjoyed spending time with Grumpy. He had such an incredible breadth of knowledge—it felt like no matter what subject came up, he knew so much about it. What I admired most was that he never stopped being curious; he was always looking for new ways to learn and grow. Don was also a joy to be around. You always wanted to be near Don at a party because he had a gift for making everyone around him laugh and feel welcome. Our mom and dad enjoyed their times with Don. I know how much his grandchildren cherished their time with Grumpy, and his warmth and humor leave behind so many wonderful memories for them to hold onto. Please know that we are thinking of you and holding you close in our hearts during this difficult time.

    With deepest sympathy and love,

    Mike and Diane

  6. I first met Don at my daughter, Angela and son in law Mitch‘s wedding in Savannah, Georgia. Don was so interesting to talk to. He had a knowledge base on a variety of subjects and was so well traveled. The next time we visited was a very memorable Christmas where the whole family got together at Angela and Mitch’s country home in High Springs Florida. It remains in my memory one of the most enjoyable Christmases ever. We had so much fun. I am so happy that Don was able to move to Florida and spend time with Elise and Emerson our grandchildren and his other Florida based grandchildren as well. Don was obviously a motivating Force for both Mitch and Sabra. I know they will miss him terribly as well all the rest of the family and especially Nina who remained devoted to the finish.

  7. I’m so very sorry to hear of Don’s passing! I worked with Don for many years at Cornelius.
I always enjoyed when he would be in the home office and we could catch up and always have great conversations!
My thoughts and prayers are with his family. 🙏
