Adrian Charles Gentes, age 89 of Alachua, Florida passed away at home on Sunday, April 10, 2023 surrounded by his family.
Adrian was born in Newport, New Hampshire to Oscar and Rose Anne Gentes, as the second oldest of 7 children.
He served in the Army for several years and while there he worked his technique as an amateur boxer using that long reach to his advantage. Upon leaving the Army, he continued his public service in the Coast Guard where he was one of the last light house keepers of the Ram Island Light (an island light house off the coast of Maine) before its automation in 1965. Following his military service, he went to work in construction, eventually reaching the status of Superintendent where he led many large projects. Upon retirement he built a house in Florida, doing most of the work himself. He was unique in his ability to master several trades and could repair just about anything.
In his spare time, he enjoyed spending time with his family, working on projects around the house, traveling to National Parks, and hiking the Appalachian Trail. He enjoyed road trips back to New Hampshire for family reunions and to marvel at the landscape of the Sunapee Region. He loved all animals, especially his dogs. Adrian bragged frequently about his children’s success and his son’s world travels.
Adrian is survived by his wife, Virginia Gentes; his sons, Steven (Jane), Scott (Gisele), and Charles (Carina), and his daughter, Terri; as well as five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his devoted younger brothers, Andre and Armand; his loving sister Annette, and a multitude of nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his siblings Rollin Gentes, Lucien Gentes, and Evette Gentes.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to: Humane Society of North Central Florida; Attn: Memorials and Tributes, 4205 NW 6th Street, Gainesville, FL 32609.
