Bruce Hill

Bruce Fleming Hill, age 82, died February 29, 2024 at the McGraw Center in Jacksonville FL from congestive heart failure. He was born December 31, 1941 in Bishop, CA, to the late John Fleming Hill and the late Ruth Mary Carr. In 1984, he married Francies Palmer that ended in divorce. He is survived by Claire H. Sink, his wife, and sons Nathan (Emily) Hill, Frederick, MD and Christian (Danielle) Hill, New Market, MD, and a sister Carol Chaput, Norwich, CT. Grandchildren survivors include: Cameron Hill, Maeve Hill, James Hill, Samuel Hill, and Lucy Hill. Step children include stepson Karl (Angela) Sink of St. Augustine, FL and stepdaughter Kara Sink, Olmsted Falls, OH. Step grandchildren include: Rachel Sink Amato, Joshua Heney, and Matthew Heney. He is preceded in death by stepson, Wesley Sink.

In 1968, he received a B.A. in psychology and biology from George Washington University, Washington, D.C; in 1973, he received a M.S. in zoology from George Washington University; and in 1980 he received a PhD in cell-molecular biology and protozoology from the University of New Hampshire, Durham NH.

His professional career comprised over 50 years in higher education as teaching positions, administration, and research. His major affiliations were with Mount Vernon College, Washington D. C., 1986 to 1999, where his positions included: faculty member, Department Chair, Dean of the Faculty, and Academic Vice President (VP). While Dean and VP, he served on committees within the Washington, D.C. Consortium of Universities including the Consortium of Universities Task Force for Joint Faculty Initiatives; Academic Affairs Committee of the Consortium of Universities; Chair, College Steering Committee, Middle States Accreditation Self-Study.

He was a post-doctoral fellow at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU), Pittsburgh, PA where he studied function and interaction in intermediate filaments and microtubules. He became Director of the Confocal Microscopy Laboratory at CMU. He served on the faculty of other universities including Saint John’s University, Collegeville, MN; Georgetown University, Washington, D.C. and University of Maryland, College Park, MD. Dr. Hill authored 57 technical publications in peer-reviewed journals; and was senior author for 33 of the publications.

Dr. Hill’s major awards and professional honors include: Presidential Award, Washington D.C. Academy of Sciences, 1993; he was named a Fellow of the Washington D.C. Academy of Sciences, 1992; and a Sears-Roebuck Foundation Teaching Excellence and Campus Leadership Award, 1989 – 1990.

Professional organizations with which Dr. Hill was affiliated with include: the American Society for Cell Biology; Society of Protozoologists; Electron Microscopy Society of America; the Washington D.C. Academy of Sciences; and Sigma Xi. He served as editor for several journals and received awards for teaching and academic leadership.

In public service, Dr. Hill served on the Up-County Citizens Advisory Board, Montgomery County MD, 1996 – 2000. He chaired its Development Committee and was Board Chair from 1999 – 2000.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contribution may be sent to the University of New Hampshire Foundation, 9 Edgewood Road, Durham, NH 03824 for its Jackson Estuarine Laboratory “in memory of Bruce F. Hill, 1980 PhD.
