Donald Evans

Donald Richard Evans departed this life on Sept. 21, 2021.

He was born on March 22, 1931 in Saratoga Springs NY as the only son and 2nd child of B.N. and Mae Evans. After high school, Don joined the Air Force and was stationed in England. Once his tour of duty was over, he toured Europe and met his wife Birte in Paris. Don and Birte were married in Copenhagen, Denmark and then moved to NJ so that Don could attend and graduate from Rutgers Univ. Their only child Marie was born in NJ. After graduation from Rutgers, Don and Birte moved to Gainesville so that Don could attend UF Pharmacy School. Don received several book awards while training to become a pharmacist, and after graduation, the small family moved to Lakeland, where Don and Birte lived for 50 years. Don was a respected and well-liked pharmacist and after retirement, he volunteered as a pharmacist for the Lakeland homeless shelter. Don loved animals and served on the board of the local SCPA to help promote the wellbeing of dogs and cats. Don and Birte traveled the world and loved making new friends in far flung places. Don and Birte returned to Gainesville in their later years and resided at the Windsor of Gainesville.

Don is survived by his wife, Birte, daughter Marie Henkel (Lewis), granddaughter Kristen Henkel (Jonah Farr), grandson Karl Henkel (Ashley Robin) and three great grandchildren, Cordelia, Bernard and Arthur.

He will be missed by all who knew him.
