With a heavy heart we announce the sudden passing of Gregory Leigh Johnson. He was tragically taken from us on December 14th, 2024. He was a loved member of the community, father, and brother.
He leaves behind his daughter Autumn Leigh Sullivan along with his brothers Eric and Alan and sister Kristen.
He was known as an award winning artist, an active docent volunteer at the Harn Museum, and Vice President duties of the Gainesville Petanque Group.
Greg was also a dedicated cyclist and very gregarious man. He was a passionate person who will be remembered for his unique personality. He will leave behind a legacy of love, laughter, and vibrant spirit.

Greg was an incredible artist who had the ability to understand and to create art from several unique perspectives. He was a kind and compassionate individual who had a great appreciation for the beauty in our environment and enjoyed sharing that love of the outdoors with others. Photos of him biking (one of his favorite sports) were usually accompanied by pictures of flowers and terrain he found interesting. I was extremely sad to hear of Greg's death!
Rest in Peace, Greg. You will always be missed

Many things wanted to talk to him about but alas he was gone before I got the chance. Â Â I wanted to talk to him more about his big bike trip along the continental divide in the rockies so in retrospect if you have something to say to someone do it now.
Rest in peace my friend.
Being a friend of Autumns and having never met Greg, I can only assume that some of her great qualities were passed down from Greg. I can only hope that the next chapter in his travels through this universe bring great success and abundant happiness.
I met Greg when I started playing Pétanque and boy was he an amazing teacher. He was a unique individual, a superb artist, a true Renaissance man.. I’m so thankful that I was able to spend good quality time with him before his untimely passing.Â
It still seems surreal that he is no longer with us.
Greg will be truly missed for his artistry and love of the game of petanque.Â
Greg was a great player and an amazing person well loved by many people may he rest in peace my friendÂ
Greg was a great outdoorsman and intellect. He lit up the trails of Gainesville and devoted his time to creating art for his beloved community. Gone too soon, he will be missed by his many friends and family!
Such talent, intelligence and sensitivity. He is terribly missed.
I enjoyed knowing Greg these last few months.
He was an eclectic. The conversation with Greg could cover, gravel and proper grooming of a Petanque court, refer to proper management of high voltage power lines, veer over for a quick reference to philosophy and finish with a punch line from a 50 year old movie.
Greg was electric. When Greg was around there was a lot of energy flickering in the air. I always had to be on my toes and self centered when Greg was around. The eclectic/electric combo could be unsettling.
Greg was an altruistic competitor. He strove to be the best – always. But, he was a softy who would give you the shirt off your back if you needed it.
Greg is a bright knot in the web of my life.
I am so sad to hear this news. Rest in peace, sculptor, poet, lover of nature and laughter. We had many wonderful times together. Sending light and love to his family.
Warmly,
Polly
