Harold Callaghan, Jr.

December 28, 2021

Dr. Harold William Callaghan II, formerly of Vestal, NY, passed away peacefully at The Palms memory care facility in Ponte Vedra Beach, FL on December 28, 2021. Born in Springfield, MA on May 23, 1943 to Harold Sr. and Dorothy Callaghan, Dr. Callaghan earned a bachelor’s degree from American International College, and a doctorate degree in dental surgery from Georgetown University. Upon graduation, he served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy and spent two years aboard the U.S.S. Forrestal. Following military service, Dr. Callaghan moved to Upstate NY and opened Parkway Dental Practice in Vestal. For close to 40 years he was dedicated to his work and took great joy in caring for his patients, community, and most of all - his wonderful staff.
After a chance meeting as spectators at the 1977 Greater Hartford Open (now Travelers Championship) in Connecticut, Dr. Callaghan and his wife, Phyllis, were happily married for over 43 years. Upon retirement, he and Phyllis relocated to Saint Augustine, FL to be closer to family.
Dr. Callaghan was an avid hockey player and golfer. He enjoyed spending time at his family’s cottage in Misquamicut, RI, where he spent several summers lifeguarding at the beach as a teenager. He loved traveling, family adventures, gardening and spending time with his four grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by son, Harry (Harold William Callaghan III), and parents, Harold Sr. and Dorothy Callaghan.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by three children, daughter Maureen (Jay) Radzavicz of Saint Johns, FL, son Mike (Jesse) Callaghan of Wallingford, CT, son Brian (Erin) Callaghan of Los Angeles, CA and younger brother Glenn (Gina) Callaghan of Sarasota, FL. He also leaves behind two beloved granddaughters, Hazel and Wren Callaghan of Wallingford, CT, and two beloved grandsons, Andy and Asher Radzavicz of Saint Johns, FL.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Dementia Society (dementiasociety.org).
