Jack Richard Burks, age 70, peacefully passed away at home on January 1, 2024, in Fort White, Florida. Born on December 1, 1953, in Gainesville, Florida, to the late Jack Hayes Burks and Ruth Sloan Burks. Jack is survived by his devoted wife, Laurette, his cherished children, Nicki Mizell (David Keen), David Rudenborg (Eric Roth), Emily Graham (James), and adoring grandchildren, Joshua Mizell, Hunter Perkins, Abbrielle Beiter, Aidan Beiter, and Christian Word. He leaves behind a brother, Terry Burks, as well as a lifetime of memories. He was preceded in death by his brother Randall Burks and son-in-law Paul Harris.
As an adventurer, Jack embraced life with an enthusiasm that knew no bounds. Whether exploring the depths of the oceans as a scuba diving instructor or cruising the open road on his motorcycle, he loved living life with those he loved the most. Traveling to destinations nationwide, Jack's passion for sports resulted in cherished experiences supporting the Florida State Seminoles, the Miami Dolphins, the Jacksonville Jaguars, and NASCAR with numerous family and friends. This past year, in celebration of their 40th wedding anniversary, Jack whisked Laurette away to the magical shores of Hawaii, revisiting the site of their original honeymoon—a testament to their enduring love and commitment.
In every situation, Jack shared happiness and warmth. He effortlessly drew laughter with his witty banter, offered a comforting voice of reason in times of stress, and shared profound wisdom, optimism, and reassuring presence that made him an indispensable pillar for his family and friends.
After retirement, Jack's life was intertwined with the ‘farm’ he and his wife built and loved. His hard work and care for all the animals and the property were part of his routine. From the dogs and cats, to horses, cows, chickens, goats, and pigs, Jack took on the role of caretaker with genuine affection. He found joy in the simple tasks and ensuring the well-being of all the animals. Jack's connection to the land and his animals reflected his compassionate nature.
Jack proudly served two enlistments in the US Army, where his commitment to duty and honor was displayed in his pride for his country. Following his military service, he completed his career with the US Postal Service in Indianapolis, Indiana, and Fort Pierce, Florida, until his retirement.
To honor Jack's service to our country, he will be laid to rest with military honors at Tallahassee National Cemetery, a tribute to a life dedicated to the principles of duty, sacrifice, and love for one's nation.
Jack's departure leaves a profound void in the lives of his family and friends, but his legacy as “Papa” will forever resonate in our hearts.

Jack will forever be a loved and true friend, and he will always be in our hearts. May God bless his family with peace and comfort during the days ahead. Love, Paul and Marilyn
Laurette and Family,Â
It is never easy to lose a loved one, even though they are suffering. Â Jack fought long and hard. He will be forever with you, in your hearts and memories. My condolences on your loss of Jack, a husband, father and grandfather.
I was truly sorry to hear of Dick’s passing and send ALL his family my sincere condolences.  I couldn’t help but notice that his oldest two sons were missing, Jeff and Tim.  Since Ive known Dick for over 50 years, I would notice that and it’s also why I refer to him as Dick.  Again, my condolences to ALL the family.
I remember Richard (as he was known to me and our other friends) from our time as teens in Jacksonville. We rode motorcycles together. I remember the birth of Jeff, Tim and Nicole. I visited with his mom and Dad. We celebrated his graduation from college, and other events with his young family.
With a heavy heart I say goodbye to my old friend.
Dear Laurette and family, our deepest sympathies. Â You know we loved you and Jack and we shared many fun experiences together! Â Cozumel might have been the best!! Â We send our love to you all. Â Love, Â Charlie and Janet.Â
