It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Jean Yates Matsuki, beloved wife, mother, sister, and friend, on January 21, 2025, at the age of 70.
Jean was born on February 3, 1954, in Patuxent River, Maryland, to Elsie and Carl Yates. She was the cherished sister of Victor, Dennis, and Sharyl, a devoted wife to her husband, Chris Matsuki, and a loving mother to her two children, Mathew and Jennifer.
Known for her big heart, infectious energy, and being the life of every party, Jean had a way of making everyone around her feel special. She was always ready with a smile, a laugh, or a kind word. Her passion for life was contagious, and she brought joy to those lucky enough to know her.
Jean had a deep love for gardening and all things DIY. There was no project she wouldn’t take on—whether it was transforming her garden into a lush paradise or tackling home improvement tasks, she was always ready to dive in and figure it out. Her creative spirit and determination will forever be remembered by her family and friends.
Jean was deeply committed to supporting victims of domestic violence, a cause that exemplified her loving and welcoming nature. She advocated for those in need, offering kindness, compassion, and unwavering support to individuals navigating difficult times. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jean’s honor to Hubbard House (click here). A celebration of her life will be held at a later date, to be determined.
Jean is survived by her loving husband, Chris; her son, Mathew; and her daughter, Jennifer, and son-in-law, Gareth.
Jean’s memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew her. She will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
Crevasse's Simple Cremation is honored to serve the Matsuki family.

🐉 Once a Dragon… Always a dragon!! 🐉
My heart and thoughts are with the Matsuki family at this incredibly difficult time. Jean has been one of my best friends for over 30 years. Our children grew up together and we have shared so many great times. Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, camping trips, school functions, proms, graduations, weddings, and retirements. As well as birthdays, Halloween and Christmas parties, and the best Japanese New Year’s celebration you could ever imagine! After her retirement she dreamed of building a greenhouse, one that she designed and built using salvaged windows and doors from old homes. And with help from my husband, and others, that was accomplished last spring. She was very proud of that! So many happy memories. My life has been richer and a great deal more fun because Jean has been in it. It is difficult to imagine her not being here. She will be missed dearly. 💐
