Jerry Peppel
May 28, 1941 - Nov. 26, 2017

Jerry passed away peacefully Sunday, November 26, at his home after a long battle with Cortico Basel Syndrome. Jerry leaves behind his wife of 54 years, Joyce Peppel, his daughter Janalyn Peppel, his sister Karen Burch and 11 nieces and nephews. He was proceeded in death by his parents, Herbert and Inez Peppel.

Jerry was born in 1941 in Fredericktown, Ohio. He moved to Gainesville in 1959, attended Gainesville High School and Santa Fe College. Jerry was a building contractor with Robert and Galen Peppel on multiple residential projects throughout Gainesville.

Jerry served in the US Army as a First Lieutenant in the 6th Artillery from 1966 to 1972. He received the Army Accommodation Medal for his service in Gelhausen, Germany.  When he returned from Germany, he opened Automotive Recycling of Gainesville, a successful, long-standing, family-owned business located in Northeast Gainesville. He incorporated JP Enterprises, Vintage Air, and Powder Coating of Gainesville over the years to provide his loyal customers with quality products and services.

Jerry was always happy spending extra time with his friends and customers about anything automotive. His many street rods and custom cars gave him great joy over the years, as well as serving as a respected business owner in Gainesville.  He retired in 2011 due to his illness.

Jerry will return to Fredericktown, Ohio, where he grew up as a child.

HThe family requests that you remember Jerry when he was the happiest - traveling, "at a car show" or helping a friend.

  5. JERRY WAS AN INSPIRATION TO ME. A FRIEND AND MENTOR, ALWAYS SEEKING PERFECTION OF MANY CRAFTS. HE WOULD ALWAYS TAKE THE TIME TO LISTEN. HE WILL BE DEARLY MISSED.

  6. God bless Jerry and his family. I remember him as a great guy. He will be dearly missed. I have a lot of good memories of him and I will keep him and family in my prayers.😢😇😇

  7. To Joyce and family. My sincere condolences on your loss of Jerry. I know Warren relied on him a lot while running Steffen Auto Repair. Two good men gone from us all.

  8. Jerry was the father of a very dear friend, Janalyn, and I met him and his wife Joyce through her. I love this family and was deeply saddened when Jerry became ill. He was always up for whatever was going on and was a friend to so many. His long work life in Gainesville at his businesses gave him the opportunity to meet so many customers — many of whom became friends. He was very proud of his family, and justifiably so. The Peppel home was always welcoming to us and it was a joy to visit with them on holidays or whenever we could. I enjoyed sharing a love of old cars with Jerry and even before I knew him (and Joyce or Janalyn), I bought a fender from them at Automotive Recyling never realizing that they would one day become friends. I have mahy fond memories of Jerry especially one day in January 2012 when, after walking the Hawthorne and La Chua Trails, he brought his 1934 beautifully restored Ford to Collector’s Day at the Natural History Museum at UF. Many of our Indian friends were thrilled with the car — and Jerry. He was special and there are many wonderful memories of times spent with him and his family. Rick and I send our sincerest condolences to his family and many friends. He will truly be missed.

  9. Rose and I send our sincere condolences to you in your loss of Jerry. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and may you find peace and understanding.

  10. Jerry was such a wonderful, and fun man. He loved his wife and daughter and would do anything in the world for them. I remember the joy he got from his trucks and cars and gong to car shows. It has been a long and hard time these last few years now he is at peace but the good memories live on in our hearts.

  11. We sure had a lot of fun together when we were kids back in Ohio. Rest in peace, cousin. Joyce, we grieve with you at your loss. Bob & Jacque

  12. I only knew Jerry for about 5 years but remembered when Derwood and I packed his car in Derwoods trailer and went to a car show in Tampa. Jerry had a great time. I went with Jerry to a few other shows but what really stood out was when Jerry and I went to the Nationals here in Gainesville. Walking through the parking lot you would here someone yelling out, "Hey Jerry" I realized that Jerry was known and loved by many car enthusiasts. Jerry you will be missed but not forgotten.

  13. Very sad to learn of the passing of this wonderful man… A loving father and husband, a great business man, and very supportive of friends and family. Sending peace and strength to Joyce and Janalyn and your family at this time of loss. Your GHS Volleyball family remembers him fondly~

  14. Jerry will surely be missed by all of the other car folks that he helped over the years by assisting them in restoring their vehicles, or giving them advice on projects. I will always remember him and his Plymouth sedan at the many car shows we attended. He shall be missed. My prayers are with Joyce and Janalyn on their loss.

  15. We remember good times being around Jerry. We pray for Gods Comfort for Joyce, Janalyn and Family in this time of loss.

  16. Joyce, Janalyn,, I was so sorry to hear about Jerry’s passing. He always was so very kind and gentle and a pleasure to know, and I know you will miss him so much. Somehow Jerry radiated an air of kindness that you felt as soon as he came into a room, even if the ‘room’ was a parking lot at a car show. I have to tell you that I was particularly shocked to read of his passing on Sunday, as I would swear that at some point on Sunday, for no particular reason that I can recall, I found myself thinking about you all, and of the last time I had run into you at a store while out shopping. I’d like to think that although it has been years since I’d seen you all, that was Jerry’s kind way of saying good-bye. He was that kind of guy I believe. Please let me know if there is anything I can do to help you in this time, even if just to lend an ear or a shoulder. Love to you! Marty Tanner

  17. We are so sorry for your loss. Jerry was a fine man who has left behind a multitude of great memories for many. His legacy lives on. We pray for your peace and comfort and please know that we are here for you. Much love, Mike and Bonnie

  18. Our deepest sympathy goes to Mrs. Peppel and the family. Mr. Jerry was by far one of the sweetest people we know. We came to know him through the automotive industry. Anytime I was looking for something (parts or advice) he never hesitated and he offered and did very good service. He will truly be missed. His warm smile and gentle voice will forever be appreciated. We will continue to pray for all of the family. Cherish the fond and ear memories. We have nothing but good memories of Mr. Jerry and that speaks volume. God bless

  19. May the comfort our lord and savior comfort you the family now in your time of need. He will be missed by many.

  20. Joyce & Janalyn, we are so sorry to hear of Jerry’s passing. It has been a tough struggle over the past years for you all. I feel as if I’ve known Jerry my whole life and he was always there willing to help when I needed it. Lots of fond memories of Jerry at Automotive Recycling, he knew that place like the back of his hand, he could find a part in that yard like a needle in a haystack. You will be truly missed, rest in peace Jerry.

  21. Very sad to learn the passing of this wonderful man.My prayers are with Joyce and Janalyn at this time of their loss.
