John "Jack" Engle

April 5, 1962 ~ July 14, 2024

Captain John "Jack" Engle, age 62 of Jacksonville, FL passed away peacefully at home on July 14, 2024.

Jack was born, much to his chagrin, in Stillwater, OK. Although he was an Army brat and lived in many places, he always considered Florida his home.

Jack graduated from Texas A & M University, Galveston in 1985. Immediately after graduation he was accepted in the Officer Sea and Air Mariner (OSAM) program where he spent three (3) years in the Navy and transitioned into the merchant marines.

Jack sailed for over 20 years with the last 13 of those years in the T-AGOS program at Maersk Line, Limited before moving to shoreside positions with the company. In 2015, he moved to Jacksonville, FL to work with Crowley Government Services. His career came full circle working the last seven (7) months as Port Captain for the T-AGOS program and the ships he once sailed.

Jack met his wife, Joanna, while working at Maersk Line, Limited. Their story started when he came to her rescue fixing a slashed tire and brought his beloved 15-year-old dog, Sandy with him. She saw the love he had for Sandy and knew he could not be all bad. Lo and behold it was true.

Of everything he was proud of, Jack was most proud of his son, Christopher, and the man he is. He admired the qualities and traits Christopher displays and only wished he possessed more of them himself.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife Joanna, son Christopher Engle, granddaughter, Emma, father Forrest Williams (Shirley), brother Chip Engle and favorite sister-in-law, Lorraine, nephew Stephen Engle (Crystal), niece Ashley Neumann (P.J.), great niece Elliott Neumann and great nephew, Harlan Neumann. Jack is predecease by his mother Alma Jo Williams.

  1. You are in our thoughts and prayers, Joanna and family. Jack will be sorely missed. Please let me know if you need anything at all.

  2. I was so sad first to hear he was in hospice and now to hear of his passing I am devastated.

Jack was the consummate professional and a dear friend.  His passing makes the world a little less interesting.

    Fair and following.

  3. A great man is hard to find but a great sailor is something made of pixie dust and unicorn tears. Jack was both and while we will miss him, we know for certain that he has crossed the bar to a port that will keep him safe from the storm. Our prayers and comfort to Joanna and Christopher and the family. I hope you find comfort in the sailor's Psalm:

The Lord is my pilot, I shall not drift.
He guides me across the dark waters.
He steers me through deep channels.
    He keeps my log.
Yea, though I sail ‘mid the thunders and tempest of life,
    I shall dread no anger, for He is with me;
His love and His care, shelter me.
He prepares a quiet harbour before me.
He anoints the waves with oil
    My ship rides calmly.
    Surely sunlight and starlight
shall guide me on the voyage I take,
And I will rest in the heaven’s port forever.

  4. I'm devastated to hear that Captain Jack has passed. He had a unique ability to make everyone around him smile, feel welcomed, and at ease. His presence brought warmth and joy, creating an atmosphere of calm and happiness wherever he went. My thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time. May they find comfort in the cherished memories and the love that surrounds them.

  5. Hey Sweetheart! I am so so sorry to hear about Jack. I always looked at you guys like the perfect couple. I am glad you have so many wonderful memories. Love you always! Aunt Deb

  6. Joanna,
I am devastated to hear about your loss. Kindly accept my heartfelt condolences and prayers to give you strength and courage to see you through these difficult times.
May his soul rest in peace.

  7. I first met Jack when he left Maersk and came to work at Crowley on the MPF program as a port captain in 2015, and years later, as port captain on the Tagos program. We worked many an agent invoice together trying to make them match our purchase orders so vendors could get paid. He always took my calls and emails and was willing to help whenever needed. He was a good co-worker and friend and will truly be missed.

  8. Jo-Jo

Sending you Love and strength as you navigate this loss. My heart goes out to you and your Family.

    Always,

    Aundie

  9. Sending love and prayers for peace and comfort to Joanna and the family and friends. May Jack’s legacy live on through us all. The memories we have will keep us laughing for years to come. Jack made me laugh a time or two. Even seeing how long he could hold a conversation would make you laugh. You know you’ve been talking too long if Joanna is telling you to move it along. 🙂 May Jack rest in peace. Until we see him again.

  10. Jack, you will truly be missed good Sir. You welcomed me with open arms when I came aboard with Crowley and made it very easy for me to make the right connections. I pray your family finds strength and comfort in your memories. Rest easy.

  11. When I first came to Crowley and began working with Government Services, Jack was one of the first people I met. Not having a maritime background, he was always there to answer questions and help me. Jack said what he thought, and you never worried about where you stood with him. I teasingly called him a big teddy bear much to his chagrin. However, when I visited a week before his passing and called him this, he didn't reprimand me.
Jack was also a wonderful storyteller. I will miss his stories about his adventures, and I will always remember how protective of Joanna he was. His love for her was unmatched.
Joanna, I am keeping you, Christopher, Emma, Chip and Lorraine in my thoughts and prayers.

  12. Joanna, I am so sorry for your loss. You met Jack as I was leaving Maersk, but I was able to see you both grow together. I'm happy he was there for you, and you where there for him. May God continue to Bless you and your family. RIH Jack.

  13. I had the pleasure of working with Jack on the MPF and Tagos programs and he was always helpful and nice to work with. He will surely be missed. Joanna, I am keeping you and your family in my thoughts and prayers. I am so sorry and send my deepest condolences.

  14. My heart dropped when I learned about this. Jack was very passionate with work and you can tell he truly cared. He was so knowledgeable and always so kind to me. He will truly be missed. Sending prayers for strength and peace for the entire family.

Joanna – you have a friend in me so please don't reach out if you need a friend to lean on.

  15. I had the pleasure of working with Captain Jack. While only for a short period of time, he left a lasting impression on me. He was stalwart, intelligent and had a wonderful dry wit. What more could one ask for in a friend.

Deepest sympathies to Joanna, family and friends.

  16. Joanna,
I am shocked!. Just now seeing this in on C-Link. I am so sorry. I know you are heart broken. I always loved talking with Captain Jack. Whenever I saw him, I would always think "what a stud!". Very impressive and was always an encyclopedia for me to go to. OK – I had a "man-crush" on him.

May the peace and comfort that only God can bring be with you and your family.

    My fondest regards,
    Jamie Lee
