In Loving Memory of Juana Maria Casanovas
May 7, 1917 – April 30, 2016
A week shy of celebrating her 99th birthday, our beloved Titi Juana departed this Earth and made her way to the most peaceful and wonderful place ever – Heaven. We are taking comfort in knowing that she lived a long, happy and love-filled life. Throughout her 99 years, she touched and shaped so many lives that we are certain many people have a little bit of her living on in their hearts. Born in Utuado, Puerto Rico, she was the fourth of eight children born to Euladia Huertas Figueroa and Conrado Casanovas Serrano. She graduated valedictorian of her eighth grade class and was even crowned “Queen of the Flowers” of her small town in Puerto Rico. She never married or had children of her own, but helped raise so many of her nieces and nephews; and in our family’s case, she even helped raise her great-nieces and -nephews. She lived most of her life in Bronx, New York and earned her living working in a clothing factory. In the mid-80’s, she won a house that would eventually root our family in Ocala, Florida. She brought cheer and laughter through her lively and well-thought-out jokes, and loved to recite impromptu rhymes in her effort to spread joy. She cooked the best Puerto Rican food ever and always made sure everyone who walked into the kitchen left with a full and satisfied tummy. Into her final days, she joked, recited poems and sang songs she learned in her childhood, and shared many vivid stories of her yesteryears. She even shared her awe for how blessed she was to have seen the world evolve in a way that many younger than her never got the chance to witness. Above all, however, she lived a Holy life, always showing great love and respect for the Lord through her thoughts, words and actions. She always reminded us that we have to count on God to get us through life, and always asked us to end a compliment with a blessing, especially when giving praise to a baby or child. She did so much good here on Earth, she earned her passage to Heaven and we have no doubt that she’s there. We miss her dearly, but know that the joy, happiness and laughter she brought to so many of us each and every day of her life will live on in our hearts and in so many beautiful memories forever. Rest in Eternal Peace Juana Maria Casanovas, until we meet again!
