Karen Prouty

October 21, 1944 ~ September 24, 2025

Karen Lee Prouty (Blomstrom), 80, of Newberry, Florida died peacefully on September 24, 2025 after a long illness. Karen is survived by her son Mark Prouty (Mary) of Auburn, Massachusetts, her daughter, Jane Prouty (Derek) of Newberry, Florida, six grandchildren: Evangeline, Alex, David, and Sloan Prouty, Janet and Julie Polston (all in Florida), nieces and nephews, her brothers Kurt and Steven Blomstrom of Auburn, Massachusetts, and many cousins, aunts, and uncles. She is preceded in death by two of her sons, Glen and Joel (Page) Prouty, her husband Malcolm Prouty, and her siblings, Barbara Marrino and Wayne Blomstrom.

Karen was born on October 21, 1944, in Worcester, Massachusetts to Alden and Eleanor (Fournier) Blomstrom. She graduated from Auburn High School and married her high school sweetheart, Malcolm. Karen graduated from Memorial Hospital in Worcester, MA, as a Registered Nurse. She worked as a nurse for many years at Memorial Hospital, as a private duty nurse, and for the state of Massachusetts as an investigator. She finished her career working at Worcester State Hospital. Karen lived in Auburn, Massachusetts most of her life. She raised her four children there and enjoyed her summers at the family’s camp on Lake Manchaug in Douglas, MA.

Karen maintained many close friendships over the span of her life. She was smart, generous, fun, and could be a little bit mischievous. Almost everyone who knew her has a tale of a “caper” with Karen. She loved to play blackjack; friends and family members have many great memories of trips with her to Atlantic City, NJ, and subsequently, to Foxwoods in Connecticut. Later in life Karen spent her winters in Key Largo, Florida, eventually retiring to Florida full time. She was an animal lover and had many pets over the course of her life. In recent years, Karen faced many physical challenges, but she enjoyed her life surrounded by family and her pets.

Guestbook

  1. I’m saddened to hear about Karen’s passing. I am privileged to have known her and her family all these years.  She had a smile on her face thru thick and thin.  Great lady

  2. I am so deeply sorry for your loss. A mother’s love is one of the strongest and most enduring gifts in life. While nothing can take away the pain of her absence, I hope you can find comfort in the memories you shared. Please let us know if there is anything we can do for your family during this difficult time. Love, Sarah and Jaison

  3. Jane and Mark and Family…Growing up our families were one big family. We had many adventures together and one of the first people that I introduced our first child to was your mom. As you said, her and my mom are up there hanging out.  I can hear the laughter now.  I am so sorry for your loss. Please know that our thoughts and prayers are with you all. Love, Michelle and Tommy and all the Cherubs.

  4. Many memories with Karen at Camp and home! Always special to all of us here! Words can’t express the sorrow as well as the joy for being a part of it!
    God bless all of you!
