MATSON - Katherine Maria Luce Matson, 89, Jacksonville, Florida, formerly of Charleston, South Carolina. Katherine departed this world on Tuesday, October 22, 2019 at Hospice on Sunbeam Road, Jacksonville, FL. She was born in Charleston, SC on December 2, 1929, and moved to Jacksonville, 14 years ago. Katherine is predeceased by her parents, Ethel Larsen Hinds and Ralph Ernest Luce, and sister, Idella "Della" Ardis.
Katherine attended Memminger High School for girls, Charleston, SC. She retired from the printing & publication department for the Department of Defense at the Charleston Naval Base Yard. After retirement Katherine worked several part-time jobs including Z-man Fishing Lures in North Charleston, SC, and the Community Education Department at Mandarin High School, Jacksonville, FL.
Katherine attended the yearly reunions for the Charleston Orphan House and the USS Thornback Submarine (SS-418), where she was reacquainted with friends. Also, she was a member of the Charleston Rifle Club Ladies Auxiliary. Her favorite past time included watching old favorites on TV, playing cards, working puzzles, shopping, bowling, BINGO, cooking southern dishes, (favorite benne seed wafers), enjoying dancing (beach shag), and enjoying socializing with family and friends.
Katherine is survived by one daughter, Katherine Linderman Masse and husband Ralph of Jacksonville, FL., two sons: Eugene Ralph Linderman and wife Patricia of Port Orange, FL., and Harry Joseph Matson, Jr. and wife Susan of James Island, SC. Grandchildren: Denise "Weezie" Fetscher Hiott and husband Michael of Charleston, SC., Robert "Robby" Matson, of James Island, SC, Kristen Matson Martin and husband Christopher of Summerville, SC, Benjamin “Ben” Linderman, of Hickory, NC, Nicholas Linderman and wife Krissy of Newton, NC, Jennifer Linderman Stoppe and husband Josh of Summerville, SC, E-4 Specialist Paratrooper-Combat Medic Kelly Linderman of Fayetteville, NC, Billie Charles Swearingen, III, and wife Emily of Virginia Beach, VA, and Brie Swearingen Mckenzie and husband Max of Cabot, AR. Step grand-children: Katherine Masse Dillard and husband Paul of Jacksonville, FL, David Hiers and wife Cathy of Kissimee, FL, fifteen great-grand-children; and three step great-grand-children, two step-great-great-grand-children; also, two nieces and two nephews.
The family wants to thank Fort Caroline Gardens Assisted Living Facility for the care and compassion they showed our loved one. Katherine enjoyed helping others and especially enjoyed setting up for Bingo. Katherine made many friends and loved each of her caregivers.
