Kathleen (Kay) Koons, a resident of Frederick, MD for 50 years, died February 26, 2024. Born April 11, 1932, in Columbia, SC, she was the daughter of the late Julian J. and Anna R. Petty.
Mrs. Koons received a bachelor’s degree in liberal arts from the University of South Carolina and did additional graduate work at the University of Maryland and Western Maryland College.
She was employed by the Frederick County school system from 1965-1990. For most of those years, she was the Media Specialist at Lewistown Elementary School in Lewistown, MD.
Mrs. Koons was active in the Frederick Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, Literacy Council of Frederick County, Delta Kappa Gamma, Frederick County Retired School Personnel Association, Frederick Woman’s Civic Club, Evangelical Lutheran Church, and a volunteer at the C. Burr Artz Library.
She was pre-deceased by her parents, her sister Martha P. Hahn, and her husband of 66-years, Donald Z. Koons. Surviving are son Dr. Keith Petty Koons and wife Kathy of Oviedo, FL; son Dr. Jay Clyde Koons and wife Teresa of Gainesville, FL; granddaughters Jennifer Koons of Washington, DC, and Allison Jalik (Laura) of Winter Garden, FL; grandsons Garrett Koons of Gainesville, FL and Nathan Koons of North Carolina, and granddaughter Kaylyn Koons of Gainesville, FL; and great-granddaughter Amelia Jalik of Winter Garden, FL.
In 2004, Mrs. Koons and husband Donald moved to Oak Hammock, a CCRC retirement community in Gainesville, Florida.

My sincere condolences to Kay's family. I have fond memories of Kay during the many years that we volunteered together for the Literacy Council. She was always glad to help out in so many ways in an organization that was solely dependent upon volunteers.
