Mary Elizabeth Iverson, age 89, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 31, 2025, in Gainesville, Florida surrounded by her family.
Born on February 7, 1936, in Linton, Indiana. Mary lived a life filled with family, friends, travel, benevolence, and hard work.
Mary worked as Graduate Secretary for Indiana University, Department of Geology in Bloomington, Indiana for almost 50 years. Mary made the extra effort to solve complex problems related to the course enrollment and financial support of her graduate students. She was a surrogate mother for her grad students and many returned to see her on a regular basis from places all over the world throughout the years. In 2014, the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at Indiana University celebrated Mary Iverson’s extraordinary impact on the department by establishing the Mary Iverson Graduate Fellowship to support graduate fellowships for students who are pursuing a M.S. or Ph.D. in Geological Sciences.
Mary was a proud member of the Women’s Auxiliary for the American Legion and enjoyed working on projects to raise funds for Veteran causes. Mary loved God and showed it by the way she lived her life serving and loving others. She happily took care of the babies in her church nursery, worked in various charitable organizations in the Bloomington, Indiana area, supporting the homeless and those in need, loved her country, was an avid Indiana University basketball fan, and loved lighthouses.
Mary loved to travel and spent extensive amounts of time on cruise ships in the Caribbean and Hawaii. She loved the desert Southwest and always had a special place in her heart for Albuquerque, New Mexico where she lived when her children were born. Mary took a bucket list seven-week trip to Australia and New Zealand in 2018 with her daughter and a custom made Alaskan holiday with her daughter and granddaughter in 2021. When Mary wasn’t on a trip, she was planning the next one.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Willis G. Livingston and Oletha Belle Clayton Livingston, brother, Gary Livingston, and sister, Mildred Livingston Arthur.
Mary is survived by her loving family, daughter, Elizabeth Iverson Schulz-Seelbach, daughter, Jeannette Iverson Rumbolo, her cherished grandchildren, Michael Rumbolo, Jessica (Jessie) Schulz, Clayton Schulz, Angel Rumbolo, expecting Mary’s first great-grandchild, Dawson William, and a very large extended family whom she loved very much.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Indiana University Mary Iverson Graduate Fellowship or The American Legion Women’s Auxiliary, Bloomington, Indiana.
