Michael Barry Barr was born on August 2, 1946, in San Francisco, California. He passed away peacefully, surrounded by love, on April 17, 2025, in Saint Augustine, Florida, at the age of 78.
Michael was a remarkable athlete with a lifelong love for tennis, golf, and traveling. He attended Denison University from 1964 to 1968, where he racked up two NCAA championships, earned four varsity letters, was named MVP twice, and captured several conference titles. Now and then, he even went to class.
Most of his adult life was rooted in California, where his career in higher education truly flourished. He spent nearly five years at Fresno State University, followed by eleven years at Cal Poly, where he served as Director of Advancement. He concluded his professional journey as President and CEO of the California Agricultural Leadership Foundation, a role that combined his leadership skills with his deep commitment to community.
In retirement, Michael rekindled his passion for tennis and embraced his newfound free time with energy and enthusiasm. After exhausting the competition in California, he set his sights on Florida to see what the East Coast had in store.
Those who knew him will remember his warm greetings, quick wit, and fierce competitiveness. If you found yourself on the opposing side of the tennis court—good luck. If you were playing golf with him—try to keep up. In private, he was a thoughtful and avid reader who loved immersing himself in classical literature.
One of the lasting joys of Michael’s life was his 42-year marriage to his beloved wife, Maria. Their favorite song, “Sara Smile,” could often be heard playing on special occasions and quiet moments alike—a tender soundtrack to a love story that never faded.
He leaves behind Maria and a family who adored him. You are profoundly missed by your devoted lover and family.
Sempre Insieme.
