Richard Joseph Butler, 54, of Gainesville, Florida, passed away on January 2, 2026, in Gainesville, FL.
Richard was born in Johnstown, Pennsylvania on November 30,1971, to John Joseph Butler and Linda Lee Butler (Finnell). He spent his first 11 years in Johnstown before moving to Gainesville, Florida, where he would finish out his life. He graduated from Gainesville High School and later attended Santa Fe Community College, studying Automotive Technology.
A lifelong hard worker, Richard spent many years as a mechanic before moving into leadership at Select Motor Car Company, where he served as CEO of Transportation. Regardless of title, Richard believed in showing up, working hard, and doing things the right way. A value he lived by every day.
Richard enjoyed comedians, fireworks, his car, loud music, and football, and he was a proud and loyal Pittsburgh Steelers fan. Known for his quick wit and infectious humor, Richard was a natural jokester. He had a rare gift for remembering people and making them feel special whether they were tellers, receptionists, car washers, or gas station clerks. He often showed his appreciation through acts of kindness, sharing his famous chili or giving thoughtful little gifts. Generous beyond measure, Richard would give the shirt off his back without hesitation if one needed it.
He was survived by his parents, John Joseph Butler and Linda Lee Butler. His brother, Steve Butler; his wife, Yovanka Morillo-Butler; and their sons, Jacob, Caleb, and Noah Butler. Sister, Laura Butler, and her children Katie Butler-Tripathi (married to Prabhanshu Tripathi), Dennis Butler, and Demondre Butler (preceded in death May 2025); and by his brother, Dennis Butler Sr., and his children DJ Jr., (raised by Aunt Laura), Dre (Deceased- raised by Aunt Laura) Tavion Butler, Eric Butler, Damori Butler, Dyamond Butler, and Dynysti Butler.
Please RSVP by Saturday to Laura via direct message or cell phone for seating arrangements and address details for his Celebration of Life.
Richard’s legacy is one of kindness, laughter, generosity, and an unwavering work ethic. He left the world better than he found it, and his spirit will live on in the countless lives he touched.

Lighting a candle in memory of my brother, Rich. He had a heart of gold and would give the shirt off his back or his last dollar to anyone in need. He took pride in everything he did, loved to cook—especially his famous chili—and made sure everyone around him felt special. He loved my brothers DJ SR’s., kids from another family (Calvin & Monte), and enjoyed taking them to hooters for the UFC frightening. Rich loved dogs deeply and had a special bond with Layla, whose loss broke his heart. His kindness, generosity, and unwavering love will forever remain in our hearts. I will see you in heaven Rich. You are up there with Dre and Great Grandma. Love You Forever. I miss you Bro!!
Sending light and love to Uncle Rich. He has always been a sweet, funny, caring soul who welcomed me into your wonderful family with open arms. Knowing he is in a better place cracking jokes right along side Demondre. Through the storm there is always the beautiful light at the end of the tunnel. Sending your whole family hugs and prayers.
Thanks Brittany! Mom and Dad and the rest of us really appreciate your prayers during this time.
