Roger Hall Barnard

Col. Roger Hall Barnard died September 18, 2017 at the E.T.York Care Center in Gainesville, Florida. He was born in Chicago on Dec. 20, 1929. He enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1948 and served honorably for 28 years on the USS Olympus, in Korea, on the USS Ranger and in Vietnam. He graduated with distinction from the Naval War College and retired in 1976 at the rank of Colonel. During his military career he was awarded the Silver Star Medal, Legion of Merit and the Purple Heart.

In 1976 he joined the National Association of Federal Credit Unions (NAFCU) and served for 17 years, the last eleven as President of the NAFCU Services Corporation.

In retirement Col. Barnard dedicated himself to the establishment and construction of the National Museum of the Marine Corps in Quantico, Virginia. In 2015 he moved to Florida to be near his family following the death of his beloved wife Sue Hoeft.

Col. Barnard is survived by his son Michael, daughter-in law Robin, granddaughters Alissa and Stephanie, and siblings Allen, Ken and Ann.

  1. I was a radio operator for the Colonel’s CP group 1967-1968 , 3 Bn 7th Marines. He was an outstanding leader who had the utmost confidence of his men. Rest in Peace Colonel, I will never forget you.
