Gainesville Fl. - Samuel Briseno (Si), 81, died peacefully in his home June 12, 2017 after a swift battle with pancreatic cancer. He was born September 9, 1935 in Struthers, Ohio to Salvador Briseno and Mary (Fradin) Briseno. At a young age he moved to New York City and grew up on the Lower East Side of Manhattan playing stickball in the streets with his brothers, Carl and Frank. From an early age he had a great love for flying, finally realizing his dreams as an Ultralight pilot, flight instructor, and EAA member. In his professional life, he was privileged to be a part of pioneering cardiac surgery. Introduced to the field of medicine as a medic in the Army, he eventually became a perfusionist, operating the pump that bypasses the heart and lungs during open-heart surgery. As a lifelong union member, he had a passion for social activism, scientific research and environmental causes. He believed and he taught his children and others that it is their duty to leave the world a better place than they found it. He has done just that.
His calming presence will be missed by many friends and family members including his brother Carl Briseno, his daughters Mariel Frost and Salina Briseno Kiker, his partner and high school sweetheart Susan Lehrer and her family, his 14 grandchildren, and his friend and former wife Eleanor Parker Briseno, as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Eleanor. I know you as Eleanor from way back. I never knew Sam, but I believe you when you say he was a wonderful person. As it happens, I was thinking of you this morning at Mass, thinking of what a beautiful person you are. May God bless you and may His light shine upon Sam.
I am praying for your family as you remember the good times and the fruitful to times. I love his concept of leaving the world a better place and I am inspired to do the same.
We are greatly saddened by the news of Sam’s passing. He will truly be missed as a partner in our adventures of ultralight flying. Our condolence s for all of Sam’s family and his high school sweetheart Susan.
He was a good guy. A flying buddy. He was very dedicated to our flying club. I always enjoyed his company. I will miss him.
Rest in Peace, Sam.
Sam was my UL instructor back in 1998 at Shawanga Valley Airport.
Just yesterday I decided to go for a drive up to the airport and discovered that it’s now a business of sine sort.. then today I decided to Google search some of the people I knew from the flying days .. Sam, George Roscoe, and a few others.
I remember Sam well, he was a very passionate instructor, great person to talk to about life, and had a great sense of humor.
Sam .. Rest In Peace, you will always be remembered by your former UL pilots you’ve brought into this world.
