Walter Scott Millsaps Obituary

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Walter Scott Millsaps on June 27th 2021 after a long and courageous battle with multiple myeloma cancer.  Walter was born on October 6 1962 in Atlanta, Ga to the late Fred Millsaps and Audrey Millsaps. He was the proud father of Samuel (mother Renee Millsaps) who is the pride of his life.  He was the brother to Judith (Andrew Robbins) and Stephen.

Walter was a graduate of the University of Florida and Mercer University (School of Law).  He practiced law in Jacksonville, Florida for most of his career.   Walter loved life and was known and loved by many within the Ponte Vedra Beach area and around the world.  He was gregarious, full of laughter, never met a stranger and always ready to give generously to anyone that needed help.  As a member of Beach Church, his deep faith guided his life to be a servant leader.  A dedicated Jaguars and University of Florida football fan, you could find him and Sam in the stands cheering wildly. He was passionate about his dogs and while many have gone before him, he leaves behind Rocky in Sam’s loving care. An avid fisherman and sharks tooth hunter, the ocean and lakes have always called to him.  He spent some of his fondest times at the water with friends and family.

His extended family includes too many to mention by name, but his nephews (Brandon, Reed and Connor) remember his bone crushing handshakes and adventurous spirit.  His love for his brother-in-law, Andy, made them inseparable when they were together. His former wife, Renee Millsaps, provided strength, grace and compassion during the many years that he suffered with cancer and was assisted by her care. Her children, Joey and Jennifer Edwards, were beloved by him as family members. If you knew him, you became a member of his tribe and his loyalty was unmatched.

The family requests donations to Team Haiti (teamhaiti.com, a 501(C) (3) organization) where there is a memory page set up for donations in honor of Walter.  Checks can be mailed to: Team Haiti 1523 Penman Road, Jacksonville Beach, Fla 32250.  Additionally, the Jacksonville Humane Society would be a grateful recipient of donations on behalf of Walter.  Donations can be made at jaxhumane.org or checks sent to 8464 Beach Blvd, Jacksonville, Fla 32216.  If you would indicate that your donation is in memory of Walter, they will provide a notice to the family.

You may reach out to the family or Beach Church for service times and details. Crevasse’s Simple Cremation is honored to
serve the Millsaps family.

  1. Sam and Renee,
I just wanted to extend my deepest sympathy to you both! It was a pleasure to have gotten to know Walter while Sam was a student at Christ's Church Academy. To see his passion and love for Sam was a true blessing. Sam, I am not able to attend the memorial service as I have moved back to Indiana as of June 1. But, I want you to know that you are in my thoughts and prayers. God has great plans for you and your future! Go out and be amazing and make your Dad proud!
    Blessings,
    Mrs. Shellie Hartford

  2. Sam and Renee, I am reaching out to you as I just learned through an Alumni posting that Walt has passed. I am an attorney in Orlando and Walt and I went to law school together at Mercer. He was my best friend during those years, he was a groomsman in my wedding, and we continued to keep in touch and visit after he moved to Jacksonville. Walt was a good friend and I am heartbroken at the news. Over recent years we did not keep in touch as we probably should have. I regret that deeply. But I do recall in one of our last conversations how proud he was of you , Sam, and how much he cherished his relationship with you, Renee. Please know that my thoughts are with you both and that I share your grief at the loss of a wonderful man. As someone said in the TeamHaiti memorial, the world is a better place because Walt was in it. My sincerest condolences. -Brian Wilson
