Wendy Price

December 31, 2022

Wendy Gorham Price, beloved mother and accomplished nurse and knitter, left her earthly body surrounded by her family and loved ones on December 31st, 2022 at the ET York Center, Haven Hospice. Gainesville, Fl.Wendy was 84 when she passed, just 11 days from her 85th birthday, January 10. Making a dramatic entrance, she was born on a cold, snowy day in England after the midwife's bicycle got stuck in the snow and she almost didn't make it in time! She attended "Dover Grammar School for Girls" and was a member of the Deal Handelian Society, performing on the violin, the piano and in the choir, singing. She became a bank teller at Barclays Bank where she met our father, an Army soldier from Daytona Beach, FL. They married, and moved to America, settling in Gainesville in 1961. While in Gainesville, she was involved in many organizations and clubs, The Gainesville Artisans Guild and The Girl Scouts, just to name a few. Between 1962 and 1976, she had 5 children at Alachua General Hospital, laughing that she should have had a dedicated room there. During these years, she was a dedicated Army wife and mom as well as UF professor’s wife traveling with our(then)Colonel Father to Ft. Bragg N.C. during the summers so he could teach and participate in training exercises and living in Gainesville during the rest of the year as he taught at UF. During the late 70's, she opened up a store, The Needle's Eye," a hub for knitting, crafting and needlepoint in the Millhopper Shopping Center. The store was open for 10 years but after 23 years of marriage, she and our dad parted ways, she closed the shop and decided to attend Nursing School at Santa Fe. She graduated in the late 80's as an RN and started working at Alachua General Hospital. She also worked at various nursing homes, Shands Home Care and Haven Hospice spanning a 30-year, nursing career.Mom's, aka Nana's talent for knitted and or crocheted washcloths, baby blankets, booties, and winter hats was unmatched. If you were lucky enough to have received one of those items, cherish it forever. She always called her washcloths, her "Magic Washcloths." She loved being a mom and grandmother. She loved being a nurse. She loved attending the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Gainesville and was in charge of Refreshments for years, always the dedicated volunteer. She loved the Arts, the Theater, all types of musical performances and folk dances, etc. She was a regular at the 43rd Street Deli and Joann Fabrics, always perusing the yarn section, even though she had hordes of yarn at home. She loved garage sales and rescuing things from the side of the road. She had a wicked sense of humor and was the queen of one-liners and wit. She loved rescuing cats and while feeding strays, accidently attracted a band of racoons that she continued to feed and watch out her pool window. She loved watching General Hospital. She loved watching funny British comedies, allowing us kids to watch Monty Python, Benny Hill and Faulty Towers from an early age. She loved a good cup of hot tea and a slice of bread and butter. (Affectionately known as a biddle.)She loved her grandchildren. Madeline Price, Graham Price, John "Max" Sperring, Harrison Price, Macy Sperring, Amelia Price, Molly Sperring, Henry Price and her 3 bonuses, Thomas Sperring, Kristin Sperring and Joseph Sperring. She was supportive, proud and excited to see all of them follow their dreams and loved keeping up with everyone's adventures. She loved her children, William Price (Kim Chaney) Harold (Jill) Price, Annette Price-Brown, Josephine (Randy) Sperring and Arthur (Heather) Price and their extended families and significant others. She loved her family in England and Sweden, her 2 sisters, Janet Gorham Lester and Alison Hall Uvner and their beautiful children and spouses. She loved her friends, patients, and almost everyone she encountered. She loved her best friend and knitting buddy Massina Arvanitis. She will be missed beyond measure and loved for eternity by her children, family and the countless lives she touched."Bring me the change."
