John Anthony “Johnny” Mitchell passed away at the age of 67 on April 10th, 2026 in his hometown of Gainesville, Florida. Johnny was the son of Barbara F. Mitchell and the late John H. Mitchell. He was born on July 6, 1958 in Atlanta, Georgia.
Johnny was a 1976 graduate of Buchholz High School and graduated from the University of Central Florida. In Orlando, he met Courtney Castro, the mother of his two daughters, Carson and Dell, and they settled in High Springs, Florida.
Johnny was a small business-owner, thrill-seeker and proud father and grandfather. Throughout his rich life, he enjoyed surfing, golfing, racing stock cars and dirt bikes and spending time with his many beloved friends and family members.
Johnny loved listening to and playing music, watching Gator basketball, cooking and eating fresh seafood and taking walks on the beach. He had a legendary sweet tooth and added fun and humor to every room he entered. He was a good and kind man.
Johnny was diagnosed with various digestive diseases starting in 2017, including colorectal and pancreatic cancer. After a courageous fight, he died in his home in Jonesville, much too soon. He is survived by his mother, Barbara Fitch Mitchell and his four sisters: Cecilia Mitchell, [Cindy] Elizabeth Mitchell Oakes, Mary Angela Bowyer and Jennifer Raye Mitchell; his ex-wife and friend Courtney E. Castro and their daughters Carson Mitchell Peña and Emma Dell Mitchell, son-in-law Tom Peña, granddaughters Elena and Renée Peña, and many nieces and nephews.
