John Anthony “Johnny” Mitchell passed away at the age of 67 on April 10th, 2026 in his hometown of Gainesville, Florida. Johnny was the son of Barbara F. Mitchell and the late John H. Mitchell. He was born on July 6, 1958 in Atlanta, Georgia.
Johnny was a 1976 graduate of Buchholz High School and graduated from the University of Central Florida. In Orlando, he met Courtney Castro, the mother of his two daughters, Carson and Dell, and they settled in High Springs, Florida.
Johnny was a small business-owner, thrill-seeker and proud father and grandfather. Throughout his rich life, he enjoyed surfing, golfing, racing stock cars and dirt bikes and spending time with his many beloved friends and family members.

Johnny loved listening to and playing music, watching Gator basketball, cooking and eating fresh seafood and taking walks on the beach. He had a legendary sweet tooth and added fun and humor to every room he entered. He was a good and kind man.

Johnny was diagnosed with various digestive diseases starting in 2017, including colorectal and pancreatic cancer. After a courageous fight, he died in his home in Jonesville, much too soon. He is survived by his mother, Barbara Fitch Mitchell and his four sisters: Cecilia Mitchell, [Cindy] Elizabeth Mitchell Oakes, Mary Angela Bowyer and Jennifer Raye Mitchell; his ex-wife and friend Courtney E. Castro and their daughters Carson Mitchell Peña and Emma Dell Mitchell, son-in-law Tom Peña, granddaughters Elena and Renée Peña, and many nieces and nephews.

  1. You will always be remembered as a man who loved car racing. You will always be in our hearts. May God hold you in His holy glory.

  2. Johnny was a very special person, he touched so many people with his humor. Please accept my sincere condolences!

  3. From Johnny up in heaven you were a great man. We all remembered you as a one. You were kind, loving and your passion for dirt bikes, and riding with brother Owen. I wish we could have another conversation about something that we will cherish missing you from heaven. From your loving Jude.

  4. We love you Johnny. Your fun spirit lives on and we are super grateful to have been a part of your life

  5. Johnny was a true and devoted friend…throughout the many years of our lives. A rare gift that I’m so grateful to have had in my life. A bond I hold deep in my heart.
Love to his sweet family, his incredible friends and especially his granddaughters 💕

  6. Johnny I’m glad you’re at peace. Thanks for making my first time driving an epic experience. Love you, bud.

  7. Johnny and I were roommates at Ranger College in Texas back in 1979. We became really good friends and stayed in touch all these years. When I moved to Florida his health issues just started. Despite all the discomfort he insisted on showing me some good trails to ride. Nothing was going to slow him down.
At Ranger College he was no doubt the coolest guy on campus. Extremely popular, he was the surfer dude from Florida where most folks at Ranger had never seen an ocean. RIP my friend. JUCO AA roomie.

  8. Rest in Peace, my friend. The only solace I have is that you are no longer suffering. You always made me laugh, even while you were in pain, each time we spoke or saw each other. You were my support when I first moved back to FL and I will always treasure that time. All my love, my friend. ❤️

  9. Johnny was was the guy you wanted to play golf , go racing, and party with. His confident sense of humor might cross a line for some, but that’s what we all liked about him. He was funny and fun to hang out with. I will miss him at the golf course with my cousins. I will miss his commentary on my poor play or his poor play, and I know we all feel sad that he left with so many more good times we still wanted to have . RIP my friend and condolences to all the family and friends.🥲

  10. Johnny, I knew you most of my life growing up in Gainesville. We had some classes together from time to time and that’s where I got to see your silly outburst every day in Art class at Buchholz. Many years later after we had both had grown up and raised our families, we had a long talk about the serious things we had experienced. That’s when I saw the grown up version of you Johnny! I can honestly say without any doubt that younger version or older version, you never, ever disappointed… I knew we would always be friends. Godspeed Johnny… Ride Free!
