Captain Jesse A. Prescott III, USN (Ret)

1944 – 2026

Jesse Allen “Al” Prescott, lovingly known as Al, passed away peacefully on May 30, 2026, at the age of 81, leaving behind a legacy of service, adventure, leadership, laughter, and unwavering devotion to family, country, and the Florida Gators.

Born in Santa Fe, New Mexico, Al spent his formative years in Flint, Michigan, and Lake Wales, Florida. He graduated from Lake Wales High School before attending St. Petersburg Junior College and later earning a Master’s Degree in Entomology from the University of Florida—a fitting achievement for a man whose curiosity about the natural world never faded.

While his academic accomplishments were impressive, Al’s life’s work was devoted to serving his country. Over a distinguished naval career spanning more than 30 years, he rose to the rank of Captain in the United States Navy. A Naval Flight Officer aboard the P-3 Orion, Al served in numerous leadership positions, including CNAP NFO NATOPS Evaluator, VP Detailer, Commanding Officer of VP-40, P-3 Requirements Officer at OPNAV, Commander of Patrol Wing One and Commander Task Force 72 in Japan, and Commanding Officer of the Navy ROTC program at the University of Florida.

To those who served alongside him, Al was a respected leader whose integrity, professionalism, and steady guidance earned admiration throughout the fleet. He loved the Navy deeply and considered it one of the greatest honors of his life to wear the uniform and serve his country.

But Al was far more than his military résumé.

He was happiest outdoors, whether hiking a mountain trail, backpacking through the wilderness, setting up camp under the stars, or simply enjoying nature’s beauty. His favorite place on earth may very well have been the snow-covered slopes of Northern California, where he could often be found carving down mountains with a grin that rivaled any teenager’s.

He also had a lifelong love affair with anything painted bright red. His beloved red 1964 Sting Ray Corvette, which he owned since 1968, was more than a car—it was practically a family member. His red Jeep Wrangler came in a close second and was often his preferred vehicle for whatever adventure awaited.

Al was a devoted fan of the Florida Gators and could usually be found cheering loudly—sometimes enthusiastically critiquing—from the stands, his living room, or anywhere a game was being played. Football and basketball were favorites, and he rarely missed a Gator football game if he could help it. Win or lose, he remained loyal to the Orange and Blue.

In retirement, Al and his beloved wife Kathleen embraced their shared passion for travel, exploring the world together. Their adventures took them across Asia, Europe, South America, Canada, and throughout the United States, creating memories and stories that will be cherished by family and friends for years to come.

Wherever Al went, he had a remarkable ability to connect with people. Through his Navy career, his travels, his love of the outdoors, and his countless adventures, he built lasting friendships across the globe. Al had friends all over the world, and many of them remained lifelong companions. Whether sharing stories over a meal, planning the next adventure, or exchanging good-natured banter, he valued those friendships deeply.

Those who knew Al will remember his trademark dry wit and perfectly timed one-liners. He possessed a unique ability to deliver a joke with a completely straight face, leaving everyone around him laughing moments later. His sense of humor, coupled with his natural leadership and gentlemanly nature, made him someone people gravitated toward and trusted.

Al is survived by his beloved wife of 58 years, Kathleen Prescott, whose love, partnership, and shared adventures were the foundation of a life well lived. Together, they built a family that brought him immense pride and joy.

He is also survived by his loving sister, Carrie (Buddy); his two daughters, Jessica Prescott and Kate Bleke; his six grandchildren, Bailey Theismann, Joshua (Alexis) Theismann, Abigail Ponder, Jacob (Yuriana) Ponder, Hunter Bleke, and Lucas Bleke; and his three great-grandchildren, Madison, Paisley, and Mateo, all of whom brought countless smiles to his face and filled his heart with love.

Above all, Al was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, friend, mentor, and patriot. He loved his family fiercely, served his country honorably, treasured the Navy, cherished the outdoors, and proudly supported the Florida Gators through every season.

A true gentleman, dedicated naval officer, loyal friend, and proud Gator, Al leaves behind a legacy of service, leadership, adventure, and love. His example will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him.

The world is a little quieter without his wisdom, a little less funny without his wit, and a little less adventurous without his spirit.

Fair winds and following seas, Captain Prescott.

Guestbook

  1. I love you Dad; I will miss you forever. I’ll always remember our times watching silly TV sitcoms, eating popcorn, our camping trips (even the time someone tried to rob us while sleeping in our tent!). I remember our jeep rides, the days you had to sit at a swim meet all day just to watch me swim for 30 seconds. I am thankful for your leadership; your wisdom; your dedication and perseverance. I’ll remember the time you grounded me and I was mad; but it taught me something. I will remember you taking me to many national parks across the US. You instilled in me a love of travel, a love of our country. A love of the Navy, the Gators, etc. You taught me that the US Navy and I share the same birthday! You cursed like a sailor and I do too. You did NOT teach me to love the cheap hotels you loved to stay in when I was growing up. You were just the best dad. I love you.

  2. Kathleen and girls!

My thoughts and prayers are with all of you!

World lost a real officer and gentleman and Kathleen you lost the love of your life!

    Love and prayers
    Pam Martin Gehle

  3. I love you Pop. You were an incredible grandfather and a true inspiration for all of us. While you never got the chance to meet your newest great grandchild I know you’re watching over him and smiling. I will miss you and all of the adventures we had, the camping trips, the beach trips, and our rides in the Jeep and the Corvette.

  4. Such a beautiful tribute to a much loved and respected man. My deepest condolences to my friend and classmate Carrie for the loss of her brother and the entire family for their loss of Al in every way that he was special to each of you.
