Daniel Mark Phillips, 66, of Fleming Island, Florida, completed his earthly adventures on July 22, 2026. Born on July 9, 1960, in Anniston, Alabama, Daniel lived a life marked by dedication to his family, his faith, and his country.
Daniel graduated from Anniston High School in 1978 and embarked on a distinguished Naval career in 1983. His journey began at the Recruit Training Center in Great Lakes, Illinois, followed by Advanced Boiler Technician School, where he graduated with honors and advanced to the rank of E4. Over the years, he continued to excel, completing specialized training as a General Regulator Automatic Boiler/Combustion Control System Technician and advancing to E5 and E6. His time working in the command’s legal office inspired him to pursue criminal justice studies at San Joaquin Delta College. This passion led him to attend Naval Justice School in Newport, Rhode Island, where he graduated with honors.
Throughout his Naval career, Daniel served with distinction aboard several vessels and commands. He was assigned to the USS William V. Tratt (DDG-44) in Charleston, South Carolina; the USS Towers (DDG-9) in Yokosuka, Japan; the USS Mars (AFS-1) in Oakland, California; and Ship Intermediate Maintenance Activity (SIMA) in Alameda, California. In December 1994, he joined the USS Independence (CV 62) in Yokosuka before accepting orders in 1997 to the Trial Service Office Pacific Detachment in Yokosuka. There, he served as the Senior Enlisted Advisor for Japan, Guam, Korea, and Hawaii. His final assignment was as the leading chief petty officer at the Command Judge Advocate Office at NAS Jacksonville before retiring from active duty in February 2004 after 21 years of service.
After retiring from the Navy, Daniel pursued higher education with characteristic determination. He earned an associate’s degree in arts from Florida Community College in 2007 and later completed a bachelor’s degree in education from the University of North Florida in 2010. He found his calling as an educator at Clay Hill Elementary School, where he became a beloved figure among students and staff alike. Known for his warm personality and culinary skills—particularly his famous seafood chowder—Daniel left an indelible mark on the school community.
Faith played a significant role in Daniel’s life where it eventually led him to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He was baptized in January 2026 and embraced opportunities for missionary work and sharing his beliefs.
Daniel found joy in many aspects of life outside of his professional accomplishments. He was an avid fan of Alabama football, the wonders of nature and the great outdoors, and films old and new, and John Grisham novels. His dog Koda provided endless entertainment—often being on the receiving end of Daniel’s good-natured yelling—and he cherished his role as “Papaw” to his grandson Jackson.
Daniel is survived by his loving wife Teresa; his children Aaron and Alanna; his parents Richard and Imogene Phillips; his brothers David and Michael Phillips; and his grandson Jackson Everetts.
A life well-lived leaves behind cherished memories that will continue to inspire those who knew him. May Daniel Mark Phillips rest peacefully as his legacy lives on through his family, friends, faith community, and all whose lives he touched.
