Erich Herbert Grammel, 94, died peacefully on Friday, September 4, 2020 at Brookdale Southside.
Erich was born in Lauden, Germany on June 26, 1926. He emigrated to the United States in 1955, settling in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where he was employed by Oster (Sunbeam).
He married Sophia Katherina Schaefer on May 14, 1960 in Milwaukee. The family resided in Milwaukee and Hubertus, Wisconsin until 1973, when they moved to Jacksonville, Florida. They lived in the Mandarin neighborhood over the next four decades.
Erich was employed by Atlantic Marine as shipfitter prior to establishing his own business, Mandarin Painting, in 1984, which he managed until his retirement in 2006. He was a member of the German American Club of St. Augustine, FL. He was a freemason, Scottish Rite 32nd degree, and a Shriner, having been a member of the Mandarin Lodge and the Morocco Temple.
He was predeceased by his wife of 41 years, Sophie, in 2001. He is survived by his daughter Barbara and son-in-law William Byrd; daughter Ursula and son-in-law Manfred Wohnlich; and son Ingo and fiancé Elizabeth Winthrop; as well as six grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

A most interesting person who was loved and respected by all who knew him. He leaves a wonderful family and many friends with many fond memories.Â
I have fond memories of Erich; he was always interesting and funny. Now he can be with Sophie in heaven.
opa was always so full of love and light, even on bad days he found a way to make them good again. he always had a way to make people smile it was practically contagious. he left an impact on everyone he knew and we most definitely will never forget his stories and memories. opa’s spirt will live on and he’ll be in our hearts and thoughts forever. may he rest peacefully w/ oma, yet again 🕊🤍Â
