George William Simons II, of Gainesville, Florida, passed away, Saturday, March 24, 2018 after fighting a heroic battle with cancer. He was 68 and served his Country in the US Navy aboard the USS Saratoga. George was a UPS Package Driver for 30 years and then retired to care for his mother-in-law, children and grandchildren. He was able to provide full-time care to both of his grandbabies until they started pre-school around the age of two. “Pop” as the boys called him, was their best buddy and loved spending time playing with Thomas the Train and watching Sesame Street with them.
George was born in Tampa and grew up in Zephyrhills. He relocated to Gainesville after he was discharged from the Navy to start his career with UPS. He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Barbara, his son Geoffrey, his daughter Katelyn, and his grandchildren Bryce and Ezra. Additionally, he is survived by his brother Robert Simons and his sister Nina Simons Duffield.
George was a caretaker – he took care of everyone and was always the first person to step up to offer help anywhere he could. He was generous, kind, and never met a stranger. He leaves a hole in the hearts of all who loved him – we will miss him dearly.
Please consider a donation to the American Cancer Society to continue research and hopefully one day obliterate this horrible disease or Haven Hospice of Gainesville who were there to help our family care for George with dignity and grace.
Crevasse's Simple Cremation is honored to serve the Simons family.

George, you will always hold a special place in my heart. Someday the "dinner club" will all meet up again. Barbara, I expect to share many fond Georgeisms with you in the future. There are too many to count! George won the heart of a special lady because he is a very special man. Love you both.
Smooth sailing for an old friend. He will be missed. George was one of a few of compassionate, thoughtful and caring people I have had the pleasure of knowing in my lifetime. Our thoughts and prayers go with his spirit and his family.
My deepest condeolences
I am honored to have known George, even if only for a short time. We had lunch together shortly after his diagnosis so he could pick my brain about my treatments. We shared a common bond, one I’m hopeful we’ll be able to eradicate in the near future. Barbara, please accept condolences from Connie and me. If you need anything, please reach out.
Deepest sympathy for the loss of George. The prayers and thoughts of the Newman family will be with Barbara and all of George’s family.
I met George at the "street rod nationals" at the Florida state fairgrounds in 2004 and was my closest friend for the past 14 years. The kindest man I ever met, I will miss him
