Hamilton Hunt Whaley, Jr.

July 14, 2018

Hamilton Hunt Whaley, Jr., age 66, went to heaven on July 14, 2018. Hunt was a United States Army veteran serving in Germany in the 1970s. Upon being honorably discharged, he attended college in Pinellas County, Florida, where he studied landscaping and ornamental horticulture. He ran his own landscaping business until moving to Gainesville, where he worked at the Coca Cola Bottling Plant. During this time, he met the love of his life, Katrina (“Trina”), and they married in 1984. After many years of dedication to Coca Cola, he returned to his love of landscaping and worked with Florida Greenkeepers, during which time he also developed his own tree farming business, Whaley Trees. Hunt retired in 2014 due to health issues.

Hunt was always an avid fisherman, boater, outdoorsman and a dedicated family man. His family’s annual summer trips to the Florida Keys during lobster season were his greatest joy.

Hunt is survived by his wife of 34 years, Katrina, son Hamilton Hunt Whaley, III, of Denver Colorado; daughter Ruby Whaley Dunaway of Gainesville; three grandchildren, Genevieve Belle Whaley and Hamilton Hunt Whaley, IV, of Colorado, and Alea Grace Dunaway of Gainesville; his father, Hamilton Hunt Whaley, Sr.; and, four siblings, Beth Fannin, Susan Fox, Fred Whaley, and David Whaley.

  6. Hunt and I served together in Germany. I am so glad we reconnected through Facebook. He and I shared a love of music, especially the Blues. 12. My deepest condolences to Hunts family! As I read his obituary, I realized that he had a great life after my memories of him as we were holding hands at Drew Park Baptist Temple at the tender age of 14. I was always quite taken with his handsomeness as well as good nature. Spent a lot of time with his whole family growing up as my grandmother (Mamaw) and mom were great friends with his mom. I know how painful it must be for the family and my heart goes out to Beth, Suze, Fred as well as his dad. May your memories give you peace in the days ahead! Lots of love ! Susan. 🥀💔

  13. My heart and my prayers go out to all the family. You guys were my second family growing up. I have great memories. I love you all.

  15. I was in Germany with Hunt. Was sorry to hear of his passing. Though we didn’t keep in touch, I thought of him and those days often. The man was a force . Respected and admired.

  16. I met Hunt in school. Road the same school bus. I was new to the area having just moved from New York. I was very shy. Hunt was the first person to talk to me on the bus. He was very sweet and genuine, liveing his spiritual values , treating everyone the same. I was so happy to catch up with him on FB and at the reunions. I know I speak for all my classmates in feeling the lose of Hunt is a big one. I have faith and take comfort in knowing he will be on my reception committee when I too make that journey home. My prayers to his family.

  17. It was always a pleasure to have hunt sing with us way back at the Round Bar in the early 1990’s. We always played better when he sang with us. I’ll miss you buddy! Dropjaw Bertone
