Jane Elida Driscoll

Jane E. Driscoll 

Jane E. Driscoll, 98, died on December 24, 2020 at Diamond Assisted Living Facility in Green Cove Springs, FL. She was a resident of Keystone Heights, FL for many years.

Born and raised in Hammonton, NJ, she was a graduate of Hammonton High School. Jane earned a Bachelor of Science degree in health and physical education with a minor in general science from NJ State Teacher’s College in Trenton, NJ.

Before moving to FL, Jane served with the Federal Government in Washington, D.C., Virginia and New York City in various capacities, all related to youth and recreation. As a school teacher, she taught physical, recreation and driver education classes. She was also active in the NJ Girl Scout Camp Sacajawea, and the Presbyterian Church and 4-H camps.

In 1956, Jane moved to Gainesville,FL with Harriet L. Flowers. She accepted a position of coordinator of Outdoor Education for the Alachua County School System. In addition, she was the Camp Director of Camp Crystal Lake in Starke Fl. During her 21 year tenure, she made Camp Crystal Lake one of the most unique recreation-education facilities in the state. Jane touched the lives of thousands of Alachua County children while working in the Alachua County school system.

During her lifetime, she has served in dozens of honorary and active service positions. She worked with Campfire Girls, the American Camping Association, parent-teacher organizations, teachers’ and educational associations and Girl Scouts. Jane was a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society, International, Beta Epsilon, Florida Chapter.

Jane was very active in her church, Faith Presbyterian in Melrose, Fl and served in several capacities (Elder and Clerk of the Session). She also volunteered her time for many years to the Lake Area Ministries

Jane enjoyed sports of all kinds and was a fan of the University of Florida Gators. She was also a regular attendee of the Bausch and Lomb Women’s Tennis Championships on Amelia Island, FL for its entire 29 years.

Jane was always very creative. She used her imagination and creativity to provide unique and different ways to reach children and adults in learning situations. She also like to work with her hands and produced many creative items during her lifetime. She was also one of the organizers of the popular Melrose Arts and crafts Festival in Melrose, FL from 1972-1992.

Jane was preceded in death by her housemate and companion, Harriet ‘Hap’ Flowers in 2013. “Hap and Jane” were well-known members of the Keystone Heights, Starke, Melrose and Gainesville, FL communities
